    Abstract: A color television display system is described which requires no dynamic convergence apparatus for small and medium size screen color picture tubes and which requires relatively simple dynamic convergence apparatus for large screen color picture tubes. The color picture tube includes an electron gun assembly for producing three adjacent coplanar beams having a predetermined maximum spacing therebetween. The electron gun assembly includes a common three-aperture beam forming electrode for establishing precise alignment of the beams. The beams are substantially converged at all points in the scanned raster as they are deflected by a deflection yoke providing negative horizontal isotropic astigmatism and positive vertical isotropic astigmatism. The gun assembly includes magnetic shield members disposed around the two outside beam paths to shield those beams from a portion of the deflection field so that the raster scanned by the three beams are the same size. In addition, the color picture tube includes a faceplate having repeating groups of three different color phosphor strips and an aperture mask including a plurality of elongated slit apertures disposed adjacent the phosphor strips to enhance the light output from the picture tube.

    Abstract: The present invention is an improvement in a method of screening a line screen slit mask color picture tube. Such method includes coating a faceplate panel of the tube with a photosensitive material, inserting a slit shadow mask into the panel and exposing the photosensitive material by passing light from a line light source through the slits of the mask. Such method further comprises positioning a generally cylindrical shaped lens between the line light source and the faceplate panel during exposure of the photosensitive material. The longitudinal axis of the lens is oriented perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the line light source. The improvement comprises moving both the faceplate panel and the cylindrical shaped lens in synchronization in a direction parallel to the line light source during the exposing step.

    Abstract: The assembly (Fig. 3) has a trio of inline cathodes (21), a first grid (G1, 23) positioned adjacent the cathodes and a second grid (G2, 25) positioned between the first grid and a first focussing electrode (G3, 27). Each grid and electrode has a trio of inline apertures aligned with the cathodes. A common, assymmetric focussing lens is, in use, established between the first focussing electrode (G3) and a second focussing electrode (G4, 29). The lens has a maximum transverse dimension in a first direction parallel to the plane of the inline apertures greater than its maximum transverse dimension in a second orthogonal direction. In order that the cross-section of each electron beam has a greater dimension in the first direction than in the second direction at the beam- entrance of the lens, there is a slotted structure (Fig. 7, 68) associated with said first (23) grid interposing a rectangular slot (68) between each aperture (64) of the first grid and the aligned aperture of the second grid. The long dimension of the rectangle is in the second direction in the first grid (23).

    Abstract: A cathode-ray tube eg. a shadow mask colour tube, includes a rectangular faceplate which has an exterior surface having curvature along both the minor (Y-Y) and major (X-X) axes wherein at least in the center portion of the faceplate, the curvature along the minor axes is greater than the curvature along the major axis (as shown in Figure 6). In a preferred arrangement the curvature along the minor axis is at least 4/3 greater than the curvature along the major axis. The arrangement provides a substantially rectangular contour near the periphery of the faceplate lying in a plane P thus creating an illusion that a picture produced on the faceplate is flat. The faceplate may be associated with a shadow mask which similarly has greater curvature along its minor axis than along its major axis. Variations in the thickness of the faceplate are also discussed.
