    Abstract: To satisfactorily control electronic equipment on the controlled side by electronic equipment on the controlling side without useless processing. The VTR 11 and the camcorder 12 are provided with memory means for storing icon information and functional information. A computer 13 sends a command requesting icon information and functional information to the VTR 11 and the camcorder 12 and obtains their information as a response. The computer 13 displays icons showing the VTR 11 and the camcorder 12 on a display 13a based upon the icon information. The computer 13 displays a control panel displaying functions with which the VTR 11 and the camcorder 12 are provided in the format of a button and others on the display 13a based upon the functional information. The computer 13 is not required to inquire of the VTR 11 and the camcorder 12 whether the functions displayed on the panel correspond to the functions of them or not and a user can operate any function of the VTR 11 and the camcorder 12 on the panel.

    Abstract: A digital interface microcomputer (DIFcon 7) sends/receives an Audio Video/Control-Command Transaction Set (AV/C-CTS) between it and other equipment connected by way of an IEEE-1394 serial bus (not illustrated). DIFcon (7) also provides both way conversion between AV/C-CTS and Local Application Control Bus System (LANC) signals. A mode control microcomputer (Modecon, 8) sends/receives LANC signals between it and the digital interface microcomputer (DIFcon, 7). A mechanism control microcomputer (Mechacon 9) controls a mechanism (e.g. a Video Tape Recorder) in accordance with commands sent from the mode control microcomputer 8. Further, mechacon (9) informs the mode control microcomputer 8 of the status of the mechanism. To enable the use by other companies of every application developed originally by using IEEE-1394, vendor unique, commands the DIFcon (7) when accepting a target key code calculates an application key code based on a cipher function and a target key code therefor. Then, it sends an opening command for the application attached to the application key code. The target, when accepting the opening command, decodes the target key code in the command. Then if the decoded target key code matches a target key code generated by the DIFcon 7, it allows execution of the command.

    Abstract: A recording medium cartridge (31) includes a memory circuit (34) for storing information concerning signals recorded on the recording medium (6) within the cartridge. The information is stored in the memory circuit in the form of a hierarchic data structure which includes a plurality of data packets having a predetermined form and length. Each data packet includes a code indicative of a level in the data structure to which the data packet belongs. At least some of the data packets include data indicative of starting and ending positions (2, 3) on the recording medium of recorded signals which the data packets represents. The hierarchic (or "tree") data structure facilitates rapid retrieval and reproduction of the signals recorded on the recording medium, particularly when the recording medium is a magnetic tape. The tree structure also facilitates storage of information in connection with recording of additional signals on the recording medium.
