    Abstract: PURPOSE:To discriminate the type of a disk without a complicated constitution by a method wherein a recording medium is discriminated on the basis of the detection result of a reflected light flux from a type indication part on the recording medium. CONSTITUTION:A groove 2 is formed in the inner circumferential part of a signal write and readout face la on an optical disk 1 for both write and readout use. It is used as a disk-type indication part. A protruding and recessed pattern is formed in the groove 2. When the groove 2 which is formed between a signal recording region and a chucking hole 1b and which is formed so as to surround the whole circumference of the hole 1b is irradiated with a laser beam flux for readout use, the laser beam flux is refracted and the light intensity of a reflected light flux is stronger in the mirror-face region around the hole 1b. A change in the light intensity is detected, a piece of information is read out and a medium can be discriminated.
