    Abstract: A method of reading bar code symbols includes the steps of optically imaging onto a light detector array a symbol comprising a plurality of individual code words each representative of an encoded item of information; processing the output signals from the array to determine the locations of the imaged code words, and to determine which of the imaged code words are valid; and making use of the redundancy of information within the bar code symbol to reconstruct the whole symbol making use only of the valid imaged code words. The method enables the bar code symbol to be read even if the light detector array has intrinsic defects preventing it from imaging over its entire surface.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for reading data in the form of indicia on a surface of a target, the indicia having a preferred reading direction, including a light source for illuminating a portion of the surface to be read with a laser beam in a scanning pattern at a predetermined scanning angle so as to scan spatially adjacent portions of the surface. A detector and a processor is provided that is operative for detecting at least a portion of the light reflected from the indicia and storing representations thereof, and further determining the angular difference between the preferred reading direction and the scanning angle. An optical component disposed adjacent the light source is provided for optically directing the laser beam along a path toward the surface and is capable of controlling and setting the predetermined scanning angle. The optical component may be automatically rotated so as to align the direction of scan with the preferred reading direction of the indicia.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a bar code symbol scanning systems. The bar code scanning system is comprised of a laser, optical and sensor components. In the present invention a mirrorless scanner arrangement mounts one or more of these components on a drive for repetitive reciprocating movement either about an axis or in a plane to effect scanning. A photodetector can also be moved in a reciprocating motion. In another embodiment, the photodetector is fixed and a light receiving lens is moved in a reciprocating motion to focus a received light beam on the fixed photodetector. In yet another embodiment received light merely falls onto the surface of a fixed photodetector.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a reader system for a record which has an information portion containing data encoded in an error-correctable format and a graphic image. The reader system is comprised of a reading unit for extracting the data from the information portion. A correction unit is provided which is coupled to the reading unit for performing error correction on the data to correct any errors in the extracted data. An output unit is coupled to the correction unit for outputting the extracted data after error correction.

    Abstract: Several embodiments are disclosed of bar code readers in which one or more piezoelectric bimorph elements are utilized as a drive element in the optical system thereof. In different embodiments, the piezoelectric bimorph element is utilized in the scanning function of the bar code reader optical system, or in a variable focus zooming function of the optical system. The bar code readers are provided with improved decoding reliability, speed and orientation freedom, with regular or high density, one or two dimensional bar codes, by using multiple beam symbol crossings, created by using one or more piezoelectric bimorph elements. In different disclosed embodiments, one or more cantilever mounted piezoelectric bimorph elements support a scanning mirror, or a focusing lens, or a laser diode, or a laser diode and limiting aperture, for movement at the free ends of the bimorph elements to produce a scanning of the bar code reader optical system. Several disclosed embodiments of the subject invention provide a beam deflector for a bar code reader optical system having a variable focus zoom lens system in which one or more cantilever mounted piezoelectric bimorph elements control the variable focus zoom lens system.
