    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reinforce the ability of a computer by providing a data gathering module with a processor for processing data read by a bar code reader and an interface for connection with a computer interface. SOLUTION: A grip or trigger 24 projected downwards from the lower surface of a receiving base is provided, and when a user holds the trigger 24, a scanning window is directed to a front part. Then, the receiving base is provided with a scanning engine and the required beam generation, detection and scanning components of the scanning engine are incorporated inside the processor 30 and a scanner 34 together with a decoder and a scanner driver. Further, a visual display device like a light emitting diode 38 and a terminal interface 36 for the connection with the computer interface are incorporated inside the receiving base and the data of a bar code read by the scanner 34 are processed in the processor 30.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the size and the weight of a component used for collection of reflected light by providing an integrated optical element, which includes a beam forming part and beam bending part made one-piece and a light collection part which collects reflected light to lead it to a detector, to scan and move a light beam. SOLUTION: A light beam 16 from a semiconductor laser 18 passes through a plastic lens 20 and is turned at 90 deg. by total reflection in a prism 22. It is emitted from the prism 22 and passes through an aperture 24 in a collection mirror 26 and strikes on an oscillatory scanning mirror 28. Then, an exit light beam 30 for scanning is generated and is led to indicia to be read. Reflected light 32 from a mark is first received by the oscillatory scanning mirror 28, and this mirror 28 leads it to a concave 34 of the collection mirror 26. The concave 34 focuses light on a photo detector 40 through an aperture 36 and a filter 38. The output signal of the photo detector 40 is supplied to proper electronics in a printed circuit board 14 by electric coupling 42.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a symbol scanning system which reads a symbol such as the bar code and suitably changes the pattern of a light beam in response to a feedback signal. CONSTITUTION: A symbol scanning system which suitably changes scanning system parameters containing the pattern and focal point of a light beam so as to improve readability of bar codes is provided with a scanner which directs the light beam toward a symbol at a prescribed position in a certain pattern in response to a coordinate control signal, detects the reflected part of the light beam, and generates the feedback signal corresponding to the detected part of the reflected light beam, a microprocessor 10 which generates a pattern control signal in response to the feedback signal, a pattern generator 20 which generates the coordinate control signal and decides a light beam pattern in response to the pattern control signal, and a signal processing circuit including a drive control unit 40A for adjusting the threshold levels of gains, band widths, and a digitizer.

    Abstract: Several embodiments are disclosed of bar code readers in which one or more piezoelectric bimorph elements are utilized as a drive element in the optical system thereof. In different embodiments, the piezoelectric bimorph element is utilized in the scanning function of the bar code reader optical system, or in a variable focus zooming function of the optical system. The bar code readers are provided with improved decoding reliability, speed and orientation freedom, with regular or high density, one or two dimensional bar codes, by using multiple beam symbol crossings, created by using one or more piezoelectric bimorph elements. In different disclosed embodiments, one or more cantilever mounted piezoelectric bimorph elements support a scanning mirror, or a focusing lens, or a laser diode, or a laser diode and limiting aperture, for movement at the free ends of the bimorph elements to produce a scanning of the bar code reader optical system. Several disclosed embodiments of the subject invention provide a beam deflector for a bar code reader optical system having a variable focus zoom lens system in which one or more cantilever mounted piezoelectric bimorph elements control the variable focus zoom lens system.
