Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide chopped carbon fibers which are suitable for carbon fiber- reinforced resins and have an excellent flowing property and an excellent bundling property, and to provide a method for producing a carbon fiber bundle useful as its raw material. SOLUTION: The method for producing the sized carbon fiber bundle is characterized by sizing a continuous carbon fiber bundle comprising bundled 15,000 to 1,000,000 single fibers with a sizing liquid having a viscosity of 0.01 to 0.1 poises and further sizing the bundle with a sizing liquid having a viscosity of 0.5 to 20 poises. Chopped carbon fibers are obtained by cutting the sized carbon fiber bundle produced by the production method in a length of 1 to 10 mm. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a short carbon fiber excellent in convergence and capable of making molded products manifest excellent electrical properties, and to provide a resin composition. SOLUTION: This short carbon fiber has 0.1-5 Ω bulk electrical resistance defined in the specification and the resin composition comprises at least two constitutive elements i.e., the short carbon fiber and a thermoplastic resin. A fiber-reinforced resin composition having excellent electrical properties is obtained by using the short carbon fiber.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a carbon fiber, having a surface oxygen concentration and a carboxyl group concentration within respective specific ranges and especially excellent in adhesion to an unsaturated matrix resin by carrying out the sizing treatment of the carbon fiber with a specified compound. SOLUTION: This carbon fiber is obtained by carrying out the surface electrolytic treatment of a carbon fiber, then applying an unsaturated polyurethane compound or an aliphatic polyisocyanate compound prepared by reacting an unsaturated alcohol or an unsaturated carboxylic acid having >=2 terminal unsaturated groups selected from vinyl group and (meth)acrylate group based on one molecule and a polar group selected from the group of amide group, imide group, urethane bond, urea bond, isocyanate group and sulfo group at >=1×10 polar group density based on the molecular weight with a polyisocyanate compound in an amount of 0. 02-5% in a water solvent system to the carbon fiber and heat-treating the resultant carbon fiber. The prepared carbon fiber has 0.02-0.2 surface oxygen concentration measured according to an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy [electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA)]} and 0. 2-3. 0% carboxyl group concentration [measured according to a modified X ray photoelectron spectroscopy (a modified ESCA)].

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a carbon fiber tow relatively uniform in adhesivity to matrix resin, thus capable of stabilizing the mechanical properties of the composite materials made by use thereof by subjecting a carbon fiber tow to such surface treatment as to periodically repeat anodization and cathodic reduction via an electrolyte solution. SOLUTION: A carbon fiber tow >=10,000 filaments of single fiber produced by baking acrylic fiber as precursor fiber is introduced into an electrolytic surface treatment unit where the tow is subjected to surface treatment in an electrolyte solution such as aqueous sulfuric acid solution by periodically repeating anodization and cathodic reduction through supplying electricity so that the reduction ratio defined by the relationship: reduction ratio = quantity of electricity for reduction/(quantity of electricity for oxidation + quantity of electricity for reduction) fall within the range 0.001 to 0.5, thus obtaining the objective carbon fiber tow 0.02-0.2 in the surface oxygen concentration: O/C determined by the X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy and

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain carbon fibers excellent in dispersibility in a cement-base inorg. material and giving a cement-base inorg. material molded body excellent in dynamic characteristics by sticking a sizing agent made of a specified compd. SOLUTION: A sizing agent made of a compd. represented by the formula R1 O-POA-R2 (where POA is polyoxyalkylene made of 2-4C alkylene oxide, R1 is alkyl, aryl, alkylaryl or alkenyl and R2 is alkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, alkenyl or H) is stuck to obtain the objective carbon fibers for reinforcing a cement-base inorg. material. The sizing agent is stuck to carbon fibers having >3,000 single fibers, the carbon fibers are formed in a flat tape shape by passing between rolls heated to 70-250 deg.C under contact while removing part of the water and then the excess water is removed in a drying furnace. The resultant tape is split into strands each consisting of 100-3,000 single fibers by contact with a splitter, the strands are bundled to form a roving and this roving is wound around a core material.
