Abstract: A system (10) according to the present invention includes a top drive (20), a torque wrench assembly (30) used for back-up, an elevator (40) (which may also be any suitable known suspendable selective clamping apparatus or device), a pipe handler (50), and a torque head (100). The elevator (40) is suspended by bails (42) from eyes (22) of the top drive (20). The torque wrench assembly (30) is suspended by a support (32) from the top drive (20). A joint compensator (224) is positioned as desired, e.g. but not limited to between the torque head (100) and the top drive (20).

Abstract: The present invention generally relates to a method and apparatus for drilling with a top drive system. In one aspect, the present invention provides for a top drive system having a top drive (50), top drive adapter (40), and a tubular positioning apparatus. In one aspect, the top drive adapter is pivotably connected to the top drive for pivoting the top drive adapter toward the casing string with respect to the top drive. In another aspect, the system includes a telescopic link system connected to a lower portion of the top drive adapter to move the casing string into engagement with the top drive adapter. In another aspect, the top drive adapter includes a housing operatively connected to the top drive and a plurality of retaining members disposed in the housing for gripping the tubular. In another aspect, the tubular positioning apparatus (100) includes a gripping member for engaging a tubular and a conveying member for positioning the gripping member (150). A spinner may be provided to rotate the tubular.

Abstract: A method of forming a centraliser involves disposing a collapsible core 935 in a pressure chamber (910, fig 10), the collapsible core 935 having a profile of a centraliser. A tubular sleeve is placed around the collapsible core and the pressure in the chamber (910, figure 10) is increased which conforms the tubular sleeve to the profile of the centralizer. The collapsible core 935 is then collapsed 935a to release it from the formed centraliser 940. The centraliser 940 may have a friction reducing coating or a resilient material on its inner surface.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a top drive system for drilling with casing is provided with an access tool to retrieve a downhole tool. Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for handling tubulars and drilling with tubulars such as casing into a formation. In one aspect of the invention, the apparatus comprises a circulating head and a cementing head operatively connectible to a gripping member (220). The circulating head (3) is used to circulate drilling fluid while drilling with casing (400), and the cementing head (4) is used to cement the casing string within the formation at a desired depth. The present invention also relates to methods and apparatus for isolating a tensile load from a drilling apparatus rotated by a top drive. In one aspect, the present invention provides a load isolator apparatus having an isolator body operatively connected to the top drive and a torque body at least partially disposed in the isolator body. In operation, the bearing assembly transfers the tensile load from the torque body to the isolator body.
