Abstract: 118,496. Stewart & Co., D., and Holmes, T. E. Oct. 11, 1917. Securing rolls on shafts.- In plate and like rolling- mills driven by toothed gearing only, to secure positive driving of the upper roll and yet prevent surfacemarking of the work owing to small differences in the speeds of the upper roll and the work and lower roll, a friction connexion is introduced between the upper roll and its driving universal shaft. The connexion consists of a cylindrical driving- member E, enclosing the coupling A of the universal shaft A , and embraced by a cylindrical driven member D fast on the spindle of the upper roll A. Screwadjusted springs G bear through radial plungers F on pads J surfaced with frictional material and bearing on the member E.

Abstract: 8452. Duncan Stewart & Co., and Crosbie, J. B. Talbot-. April 10. Roller mills. - I n hydraulic pressure-regulating gear for sugarcane mills &c., the hydraulic cylinder B is secured within t h e aperture in the housing- cap A by any of the devices hitherto applied for securing the covers of the hydraulic cylinders, and the ram G bears upon the roll bearing-brass, either directly or through a distancepiece. The ram may have a brass shoe or liner E, the usual packing F being between it and the cylinder. Hydraulic c o nnexion is made to an aperture H i n t h e cylinder head, and this aperture serves, when the connexion is removed, for the insertion of an eye-bolt J for removing the cylinder and ram or liner. A removable cover K is provided for the cavity in the cap. The cylinder is shown secured in the aperture by a bayonet-joint C, D, but the divided - ring device described in Specification 33/12 may be used.

Abstract: 1,222,652. Stacking bricks etc.; grippers. DUNCAN STEWART (BONNYBRIDGE) Ltd. 17 April, 1968 [16 Feb., 1967; 13 May, 1967], Nos. 7473/67 and 22287/67. Headings B8C and B8H. Articles, e.g. bricks, to be stacked are turned on their sides and formed into a row which is lifted by a clamping device and removed to form part of the stack. Bricks from a brickmaking machine 12 are conveyed on endless belts 13, 14 to a transversely movable trolley 17, having two sets of rollers 18, 19, arranged so, as one receives a brick from one of the belts 13, 14, another brick is pushed from the other, on to rollers 28. The bricks are then turned on their side by a pair of endless belts 30, 31 each twisted through 90 degrees and are individually delivered on to rollers 7 which lower to place the bricks on endless belts 3 and a device (171), Fig. 5 (not shown), positions each brick correctly. The belts 3 move intermittently to form a row of bricks spaced slightly apart. The first brick of the row actuates a valve causing plates 55, 56 to pivot, clamp the row and raise it clear of the belts 3. The plates 55, 56 are hinged on a frame 53, which is resiliently mounted via plungers (54), Fig. 2 (not shown), to the ram (52) of a piston and cylinder device 51 attached to a trolley 44. The trolley is moved by piston and cylinder devices 45, 46 and has buffers 73 which engage either the frame 66 or stops 71, 72 mounted on a rotatable shaft 62. These stops can thus arrest the movement of the trolley at three positions on each side of its loading position. A stack can be formed on a pallet on one side of the loading position with a base three rows wide, and a similar stack can be formed on a pallet on the opposite side. This change over is controlled by a cam (112), Fig. 5 (not shown), rotated by shaft 62 through gearing 115. In a modification (not shown) the brick tipping belts 30, 31 are replaced by inclined parallel roller conveyers with one preceding and slightly above the other and the bricks moving under gravity. Between the conveyers is a vertical L-shaped roller platform, with the horizontal face level with the first conveyer and pivoted about the edge opposite to that to which the upright face is fixed. Balance is maintained by an arm with a weight, extending beyond the pivot edge, until a brick is delivered on to the horizontal face causing the platform to pivot and the brick to tip on its side on to the previously vertical face which is now horizontal and level with the second conveyer. During the tipping a plate arrests the flow of bricks from the first conveyer.

A rectangular building block 14 made from blue clay, concrete or sand-lime, has parallel undercut jointing grooves 16 running along the top and bottom and sides thereof, with notches 18 formed in the walls of the grooves at each right-angled turn in the grooves, and has holes 20 therethrough, through which reinforcing rods may be passed if desired.

Abstract: 410,111. Hydraulic accumulators. STEWART & CO., Ltd., D., and HADDEN, W. M., London Road Iron Works, Glasgow. Nov. 9, 1932, No. 31598. [Class 69 (ii).] In hydraulic apparatus for loading and maintaining the shiftable roll of a mangle, a sugar cane or other rolling mill, parallel to its complementary roll, each roller ram is connected to an accumulator, the accumulators being connected for action in unison and being loaded by a common weight or other device, e.g., a solenoid or hydraulic ram. The accumulators may be side by side, or may be in tandem as shown. The accumulator rams G, H may be of unequal or equal effective areas, and subject to equal or unequal pressures, and the roller rams A, D may be of equal or unequal areas.
