Abstract:
A system for indicating a location within a body of a patient comprises: a reference contour (394) having a position in fixed relation to the body for providing reference points; means (320, 324) for generating images of the body, said images including reference images corresponding to the reference contour; reference means (300) having a location outside the body for providing a reference; a surgical probe (302) including a tip (301, 541) having a position; first means (360) for determining the position of the tip of the surgical probe relative to the reference means; second means (306) for determining the position of the reference contour of the body relative to the reference means so that the position of the tip relative to the reference contour of the body is a known position; means (314) for translating the known position of the surgical probe to provide a translated position within a coordinate system corresponding to the images of the body; and means (326) for displaying an image of the body to provide a displayed image that corresponds to the translated position of the tip of the surgical probe.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to isolated, attenuated viral strains of human parainfluenza virus 2 (HPIV-2), which are useful in live vaccine preparations. These strains exhibit a temperature sensitive and cold adapted phenotype useful for stimulating a protective immune response in an inoculated mammal without producing severe symptoms.
Abstract:
Adenovirus E1B 19 kD protein protects against cell death induced by viral infection and certain external physical and chemical stimuli. Activity of the 19 kD protein is similar to the cell death suppressing activity of the protein coded by the Bcl-2 protooncogene. Bcl-2 protein can functionally substitute for the E1B 19 kD protein during adenovirus infection and in transformation of primary cells with adenovirus E1A. Five different cDNA's for proteins, designated Nip1, Nip2, Nip3, Bip1A and Bip13 that specifically interact with the 19 kD protein were found. Mutational analysis of the interaction indicates that at least four of the proteins (Nip1, Nip2, Nip3 and Bip1A) associate with 19 kD protein at specific sites thereof. Homologous motifs are found on Bcl2. An additional protein, (Bip5), interacts with Bcl-2 but not with the 19K protein.
Abstract:
Disclosed is an improved biofuel cell having a cathode comprising a dual function membrane, which contains an oxygen oxidoreductase enzyme immobilized within a buffered compartment of the membrane and an electron transport mediator which transfers electrons from an electron conducting electrode to the redox reaction catalyzed by the oxygen oxidoreductase enzyme. The improved biofuel cell also has an anode that contains an oxidoreductase enzyme that uses an organic fuel, such as alcohol, as a substrate. An electric current can flow between the anode and the cathode.

Abstract:
A system is described for use in imaging a subject which comprises memory (320) including a first scan image (FIG. 5C) of the subject, an imaging probe (500) configured to scan the subject and provide a second scan image (FIG. 5B) of the subject, means (502) for sending a signal representing a position of the subject, means (370) for sending a signal representing a position of the imaging probe (500), an array of receivers (300) in communication with the subject position signalling means and the imaging probe position signalling means, and a processor (314) in communication with the array. The processor (314) is configured to determine the position of the subject relative to the array (300), to determine the position of the imaging probe (500) relative to the array (300), to determine the position of the imaging probe (500) relative to the subject, and to determine the position in the first scan image (FIG. 5C) and the second scan image (FIG. 5B) corresponding to the position of the imaging probe (500) relative to the subject.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a method of enhancing TGF-β signaling in a subject comprising administering to said subject a clathrin-dependent endocytosis inhibitor in an amount sufficient to enhance TGF- β signaling. In another aspect, the invention is directed to a method of treating a condition associated with decreased TGF- β signaling in a patient in need thereof comprising administering to said patient a clathrin-dependent endocytosis inhibitor in a therapeutically effective amount.
