Abstract: Esterquat compositions are disclosed that comprise, based on the weight of the composition, 0% to about 70% by weight of a solvent, and about 30% to 100% by weight of a mixture comprising about 50% to about 80% by weight, based on the weight of the mixture, of esterquats and about 20% to about 50% by weight, based on the weight of the mixture, of mono- and diglycerides. The esterquat compositions can be prepared by the direct esterification of a natural oil with an alkanolamine, followed by quaternization in the presence of the solvent. The esterquat compositions can be formulated into hair care compositions that provide improved wet and dry combing properties.

Abstract: Polyether- or polyester-epoxide polymer (PEEP) compositions are disclosed. The compositions comprise reaction products of a polyepoxide compound and a polyol composition. The polyol composition has a melting point within the range of 20°C to 100°C and a hydroxyl number less than 35 mg KOH/g. The PEEP composition is a solid- solid phase-change material. As measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at a heating/cooling rate of 10°C/minute, the PEEP composition has a transition temperature within the range of -10°C to 70°C, a latent heat at the transition temperature within the range of 30 to 200 J/g, and little or no detectable hysteresis or supercooling upon thermal cycling over at least five heating/cooling cycles that encompass the transition temperature. The PEEP compositions should enable formulators to manage thermal energy changes in many practical applications, including automotive, marine or aircraft parts, building materials, appliance insulation, electronics, textiles, garments, and paints or coatings.

Abstract: Polymers useful in formulating dispersing agents for pigments are disclosed. One such polymer can be made from a glycidyl intermediate. A nucleophilic initiator can be reacted with epichlorohydrin to produce a glycidyl intermediate. This intermediate is reacted with an aralkylated phenol to give a hydroxy-functional hydrophobe. Alkoxylation of the hydrophobe gives the desired polymer. In an alternative, approach, the polymer is made by reacting the nucleophilic initiator with an aralkylated phenol glycidyl ether to give the hydroxy-functional hydrophobe, which is then alkoxylated. Pigments dispersions comprising the polymers are also disclosed. The polymers meet the growing needs of the industry with their ease of manufacture, diverse structures, and desirable performance attributes for dispersing a wide range of organic and inorganic pigments. Agricultural applications for the polymers are also disclosed.

Abstract: Polyether-epoxide polymer compositions are disclosed. The compositions comprise a reaction product of a polyepoxide compound and a polyol composition comprising a polyether polyol. The ratio of epoxy equivalents to hydroxyl equivalents is within the range of 0.5:1 to 3:1. The polyether-epoxide composition has a Tg within the range of -40°C to 60°C. The polyether polyol has a hydroxyl value within the range of 150 to 800 mg KOH/g and an average hydroxyl functionality within the range of 3.5 to 8.0. In some aspects, the polyol composition further comprises a polyester polyol. Low- and elevated-temperature processes catalyzed by bases or Lewis acids for making the polyether-epoxide compositions are also disclosed. In a simple yet innovative approach, a new class of polymers useful for coatings, elastomers, adhesives, sealants, and other valuable products is assembled from readily available starting materials without reliance on polyamines or polyisocyanates.

Abstract: An enzymatic process for producing fatty acid triglycerides using a lipase catalyst system that includes a mixture of a supported lipase catalyst and an additive, such as silica gel. The additive is used without adsorbing any of the acyl group donor or acyl group acceptor reactants onto the additive. Use of the catalyst system decreases production reaction time, decreases the temperatures required for reaction, and allows for a single reaction vessel. The catalyst system can be used to efficiently produce medium chain triglycerides or conjugated linoleic acid triglycerides.

Abstract: Detergent compositions comprising one or more surfactants and a polyetheramine composition are disclosed. The polyetheramine composition comprises a compound having a polyglycerol core and an aminoalkyl group or an oxidized aminoalkyl group that is bonded directly or indirectly to each available oxygen of the polyglycerol core. Optionally, oxyalkylene groups link available oxygens of the polyglycerol core to the aminoalkyl or oxidized aminoalkyl groups. Methods for laundering textile articles and other cleaning methods using the detergent compositions are also disclosed. The polyetheramines can use diglycerol, a convenient plant- based starter. Laundry detergents comprising the polyetheramines provide enhanced cold-water cleaning performance for greasy or oily stains compared with similar detergents formulated without the polyetheramines.

Abstract: Methods of making an alpha-olefin sulfonic dimer acid (AOS dimer acid) are disclosed. In one method, an alpha-olefin is sulfonated, preferably with sulfur trioxide, to produce a mixture comprising an alpha-olefin sulfonic acid (AOS acid) and sulfur dioxide. This mixture is then heated while purging sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide from the reactor to produce an AOS dimer acid composition. In another method, the AOS acid mixture is treated to remove sulfur dioxide and is then heated to produce an AOS dimer acid composition. With either method, the resulting AOS dimer acid composition has at least a 30% decrease in the level of elemental sulfur when compared with that of an AOS dimer acid composition prepared by a similar process in the absence of any active removal of sulfur dioxide or hydrogen sulfide. AOS dimer acid compositions and salts of the AOS dimer acids, which are useful surfactants for oilfield and other applications, are also disclosed.

Abstract: Coating remover compositions and their methods of use are disclosed. The compositions comprise an organic solvent, a saturated or unsaturated C 6 -C 16 alkyl N,N- dialkylamide, and a C 6 -C 16 monoalkyl or C 6 -C 16 dialkyl quaternary ammonium compound. The compositions loosen, dissolve or disintegrate common paints, adhesives, sealants, elastomers, baked-on soils, and other coatings. Surprisingly, the combination of the fatty amide and quaternary ammonium compound, when used with traditional solvents such as NMP or dibasic esters, accelerates removal of a wide range of hard-to-remove coatings, including latex, oil-based paint, alkyds, epoxies, and asphalt cement and avoids the need to use dichloromethane.

Abstract: A cold-water cleaning method and laundry detergents useful therein are disclosed. The method comprises laundering one or more textile articles in water having a temperature less than or equal to 30°C in the presence of a detergent comprising a C 4 -C 14 dialkyl sulfosuccinate or sulfomethylsuccinate, a linear alkylbenzene sulfonate, and an optional nonionic surfactant. We surprisingly found that combinations of C 4 -C 14 dialkyl sulfosuccinates or sulfomethylsuccinate and linear alkylbenzene sulfonates provide outstanding performance in removing greasy stains such as beef tallow from soiled articles even at wash temperatures of 30°C or less.
