    Abstract: Granules of plastics material have grains of an inert mineral such as sand coated thereon to provide a habitat for microorganisms effective in waste water treatment, the granules having a predetermined particle size range, and the grains having a predetermined particle size range and being disposed at a predetermined packing density range on the granules. The particles have an average density of approximately 1.0 g/cc such that a proportion tend to float and a proportion tend to sink in the waste water. The particles arc manufactured by contacting the granules of plastics material with a mixture of grains of the inert mineral and grains of a soluble substance such as salt, at an elevated temperature, to coat the granules with the mixture, and subsequently dissolving the soluble substance grains from the coating to provide the granules coated with the grains of inert mineral in the predetermined packing density range.

    Abstract: An anti-theft alarm is provided, for a portable device such as a laptop computer. An embodiment of the anti-theft alarm comprises three main components: a uniquely coded tag for attachment to the bottom of the device, a pad upon which the device is placed, for sensing the tag, and an electrically powered control module. The module is connected to the pad. The control module is able to determine if the tag is still in contact with the pad - if not an alarm sounds immediately. The module can also determine if the electrical power has been disconnected and if the module has been moved (using a motion sensor). If there is no power and the module has been moved, an alarm sounds immediately. The alarm can be disabled with a key switch.

    Abstract: An anti-theft alarm is provided, for an externally powered electrically operated device which has an openable case containing internal components. The alarm comprises: a) a rechargeable battery b) a motion sensor to detect movement of the device, and a tamper switch to determine if the case is about to be opened or has been opened, c) a DC power supply connected to a circuit for recharging the battery, the DC supply being dependent on the external power supply for the device, d) a warning means activated by controller, powered by the battery, the controller being activated by a condition selected from the group consisting of i) no DC power and activation of the motion sensor and ii) activation of the tamper switch e) an arming latch which keeps the warning means activated when either of the conditions in d) is satisfied e) a key switch which is adapted to disarm the alarm when the DC power is off. The alarm is particularly useful for computers which are valuable in themselves or have valuable components.

    Abstract: Thermoplastic granules (such as polyethylene granules) are provided at a temperature below their softening temperature. Mineral grains, for example a mixture of sand and salt grains, are heated to a temperature greater than the softening temperature of the plastics material granules. The granules and the heated grains are tumbled together so that the granules become coated with the grains, and the coated granules are allowed to cool while the tumbling preferably continues. The hot coated granules can be at least partially cooled by the addition of an excess of cold grains. After cooling, the salt grains are dissolved away in water leaving the granules coated substantially solely with the sand grains. These particles are then particularly suitable for use as a fluidizable bed in waste water treatment plants.
