Abstract: In a new process for reversible or irreversible production of an image by the photographic effect of energy on a recordng layer in the presence or absence of an electrical and/or magnetic field, a pattern of surface charges corresponding to the photographic effect of energy is produced on the surface of the recording layer. The recording layer contains or consists of a vitreous organic material which has permanent dipoles and zero or negligible photoconductivity. The surface charge pattern is produced, with little or no formation of free charge carriers, by reversible photographic alignment of all or some of the permanent dipoles present in the recording layers. The new process is advantageously carried out with a new appliance which comprises a suitable recording element, devices for obtaining the photographic effect of energy on the recording layer of the recording element, and a counter-electrode in direct contact with the recording layer and which can be separated from the latter. The surface charge pattern produced by the new process can be treated with liquid or solid toners. The resulting toner image can then be fixed on the recording layer or transferred from the recording layer to another surface. The surface charge pattern can then be erased by the action of energy over the entire surface. It is thus possible to produce photocopies without using the high-voltage sources required for conventional electrophotographic processes.
