    Abstract: Liquid-crystalline polymers having a virtually uniform molecular weight are obtainable by polymerisation of identical or different monomers of the formula I in which the variables have the following meanings: R is hydrogen, chlorine or methyl; A is a flexible, long-chain moiety which acts as a spacer; B is a mesogenic moiety built up from at least two aromatic rings linked to one another in a linear or approximately linear manner; C is an optically active, chiral moiety, in 0.01 to 0.1 molar solution in an inert organic solvent in the presence of from 1 to 40 mol %, based on the monomers, of a free-radical initiator at a temperature between 40 and 60 DEG C for from 100 to 140 hours, and subsequent isolation of the polymerisation product from the reaction mixture, and the use thereof for building up recording layers for laser-optical and electrical recording elements and for electrophotography and for the construction of liquid-crystalline display elements.

    Abstract: In a novel process for reversible or irreversible production of an image by imagewise action of energy upon a recording layer, whereby a pattern, corresponding to the imagewise action of the energy, of surface charges results on the surface of the recording layer, a recording layer is used which - contains or consists of an organic material which solidifies to a glassy state, is not or is only slightly photoconductive and contains permanent dipoles, wherein - the pattern of surface charges is produced without or almost without formation of free charge carriers by reversible imagewise alignment of all the permanent dipoles, or a part thereof, present in the recording layer by means of an electric field applied imagewise. The novel process is advantageously carried out by means of a novel apparatus which comprises a suitable recording element, devices for the imagewise action of an electric field upon the recording layer of the recording element and a counter electrode which is in direct, non-frictional contact with the recording layer and can be removed again from the latter. The pattern of surface charges, as produced by the novel process, can be toned with liquid or solid toners. The resulting toner image can then either be fixed on the recording layer or be transferred from the recording layer to another surface, whereupon the pattern of surface charges can be erased again by energy acting on the whole area. After this, a new image can be produced again. In this way, photocopies can be produced without having to use the high-voltage sources necessary in the conventional electrophotographic processes.
