    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the production of rigid foams containing urethane or urethane and isocyanurate groups by reacting a) polyoxypropylene- or polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene-polyols containing secondary hydroxyl groups, having a functionality of from 3.5 to 4.3, a hydroxyl number of from 350 to 650 and a viscosity of from 500 to 2,500 mPa.s at 23 DEG C, prepared by anionic polymerisation of 1,2-propylene oxide or ethylene oxide and 1,2-propylene oxide onto an initiator molecule mixture containing, based on the total weight, a1) from 40 to 80 % by weight of hexanetetrols, a2) from 1 to 30 % by weight of hexanetriols, a3) from 0 to 35 % by weight of glycerol and a4) from 0 to 15 % by weight of sorbitol or mannitol or mixtures thereof, and b) optionally low-molecular-weight chain extenders and/or crosslinking agents with c) organic, optionally modified polyisocyanates, in the presence of d) blowing agents, e) catalysts and optionally f) assistants and/or additives, and to the polyoxypropylene-polyols and polyoxyethylene- polyoxypropylene-polyols which can be used for this purpose.

    Abstract: The novel copolymers having K values of from 5 to 80 are prepared by free-radical polymerisation of A) 20 to 80% by weight, based on the total weight of (A) and (B), of at least one olefinically unsaturated polyoxyalkylene alcohol or polyester alcohol adduct, (B) 80 to 20% by weight, based on the total weight of (A) and (B), of at least one vinyl monomer from the group comprising N-vinylformamide, -2-pyrrolidone, -2-piperidone, -2-caprolactam, -imidazole, -2-ethyleneurea and -2-propyleneurea, C) 0.05 to 40 parts by weight of glycidyl acrylate and/or glycidyl methacrylate, D) 0 to 10 parts by weight of at least one alpha , beta -monoolefinically unsaturated acid and E) 0 to 30 parts by weight of at least one olefinically unsaturated carboxamide and/or carboxylate and/or styrene, the parts by weight of (C), (D) and (E) in each case being based on 100 parts by weight of the monomers (A) and (B). The copolymers are used as assistants and/or additives, for example as dispersion and/or emulsification assistants, or as additives for improving the mechanical properties, in formulations for the preparation of polyisocyanate polyaddition products.

    Abstract: Process mixts. of polyether-polyols of very different mol.wt. (I) which are based on a starter cpd. (II) (with mol.wt. up to 400 and contg. n = 2-8 OH, SH and/or NH gps. and/or n = 1-4 prim. NH2 gps.) and involves (a) reaction of 1 mol. (II) with r = 1n-20n mols. epoxide (III) in the presence of base; (b) further alkoxylation with s = 5n-30n mols. (III), with continuous or portionwise addn. of 1-10 times the amt. of the mixt. obtd. in stage (a); and opt. (c) reaction of the polyether-polyol obtd. with a further amt. of epoxide. More specifically, 1-60 wt.% of the stage (a) prod. (IV) is sepd. and reacted with more (III) in stage (b), while adding the remaining 40-99 wt.% (IV) as above; (III) is ethylene or propylene oxide (EO or PO). USE/ADVANTAGE - Useful for the prodn. of polyesters and polyurethanes (PU). The process enables the prodn. of (I) with a wide mol. wt. distribution, as required esp. for the prodn. of PU foam with improved elasticity and low crushing strength, without using CFC blowing agents.     Abstract: The present invention relates to transparent essentially non-cellular polyurethane casting compositions that are sterilizable with superheated steam which are prepared by reacting: (A) modified diphenylmethane diisocyanates (A) liquid at 23 DEG C. obtained by reacting (A1) 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate or (A2) 2,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate or (A3) a diphenylmethane diisocyanate mixture with (A4) at least one polyoxypropylene polyol and/or (A5) at least one polyoxypropylene polyoxyethylene polyol containing 1 to 80 weight percent of ethylene oxide units whereby (A4) and (A5) have a functionality of 4 to 8 and a hydroxyl number of 150 to 500 and are obtained while using sucrose and/or preferably sorbitol as initiator molecules (A6) a mixture of (A4) and/or (A5) and at least one polyoxypropylene polyol and/or polyoxyethylene polyol initiated with glycerine and/or trimethylolpropane in a NCO:OH group ratio of 2.5:1 to 15:1 with (B) at least one compound having at least reactive hydrogen atoms which preferably contains no primary, secondary or tertiary amino groups in bonded form in the presence of or absence of (C) catalysts. The present invention also relates to a process for the preparation of polyurethane casting compositions and their use for medical-technical articles.

    Abstract: Prodn. of polyurethane foam involves reacting (a) organic and/or modified organic polyisocyanate(s) with (b) polyol(s) of relatively high mol. wt., which contain at least 2 reactive H atoms and (c) opt. low mol. chain extender and/or crosslinker in the presence of (d) blowing agent, (e) catalyst and (f) opt. additives. The novelty is that the catalyst comprises aminoalkyl- or aminophenyl-imidazole cpds. of formula (IA) and/or (IB). In (IA) and (IB), R ,R , R = 1-10C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, N-mono- and N,N-di-(1-4C)-alkylamino, N-mono- and N,N-di-(1-4C)-alkylamino-(2-4C)-alkylene, Ph, halogen or H; R = as R except halogen and alkoxy; X = 2-6C alkylene or phenylene; Y = H, 2-4C hydroxyalkyl or hydroxypoly-(2-20C)-oxyalkylene; Z = 1-4C alkyl, Ph or as Y. Also claimed is the use of (IA) and/or (IB), esp. 1-(3-aminopropyl)-imidazole (IC), 1-(3-aminopropyl)-2-methylimidazole (ID) or 1-(3-aminopropyl)-2-ethyl-4-methylimidazole (IE) as catalyst for the prodn. of polyisocyanate polyadducts.
