    Abstract: The invention comprises dyes, free from sulphonic and carboxyli acid groups of formula: where Ar1 and Ar2 are monocyclic aromatic radicals, which may be substituted, R is H or alkyl, x is 2 or 3 and y is 3 to 7. They are made by conventional processes in which a diazo compound derived from Ar1 is coupled with appropriate azo components. Indicated substituents for Ar1 and Ar2 are halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, nitro, alkyl sulphone, cyano and sulphonamide groups. The dyes colour polymers containing acrylonitrile, e.g. polyacrylonitrile or copolymers of acrylonitrile with other vinyl or vinylidene compounds such as vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride, fluoride, acetate or propionate, vinyl pyridine, vinyl imidazole, vinyl alcohol and acrylic and methacrylic esters and amides. The dyes may be used from neutral or acid baths as the free bases or as salts with inorganic or organic acids or double salts with heavy metal halides. The polymers may be in such forms as fibres, flocks, threads or foils or as woven or knitted goods. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in dyeing acrylonitrile polymeric materials in red or orange shades, the azo component used having Ar2 as phenyl, R as methyl, x as 2 and y as 5.

    Abstract: The invention comprises sulphonamides having, in one tautomeric form, the general formula wherein Ar is an aromatic radical such as a phenyl or naphthyl radical optionally bearing substituents, for example alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxy, nitro or halogen substituents, and n is an integer from 3 to 7, and their preparation by treating an amino substituted aromatic sulphonamide with an O-alkyl ether of a lactam, preferably in an indifferent medium in the presence of a tertiary amine catalyst. The compounds are used as pesticides, medicaments and azo dye components. In examples: (1) sulphanilamide is treated with butyrolactim-O-methyl ether to give 2-sulphanilamido - D 1 - pyrroline; (2) 3 - amino - 4-methoxy benzenesulphonamide is treated with caprolactim to give 2-(31-amino-41-methoxy-benzenesulphonamido) - D 1 - tetrahydroazepine; by similar methods there are prepared 2-sulphanilamido -, 2 - (21 - methyl - 51 - methoxy-sulphanilamido) -, 2 - (21 : 51 - dimethoxy - sulphanilamido) -, 2 - (21 - amino - 51 - nitro - benzenesulphonamido) -, 2 - (31 - amino - 41 chlorobenzenesulphonamido) - and 2 - (21 - amino-naphthalene - 61 - sulphonamido) -, a D 1 - tetrahydro-azepine and 2-sulphanilamido- D 1-tetrahydropyridine.
