    Abstract: Beta - ionylidene - ethyl - triarylphosphonium halides are obtained by reacting a triarylphosphine hydrohalide, a tri-(methyl or ethyl substituted-aryl)-phosphine hydrohalide, or one of the said triaryl phosphines and hydrogen halide with 5-(21,61,61,-trimethyl-cyclohexene-(11) - yl - (11) - 3 - methyl - pentadiene - (1,4)-ol - (3)(vinyl - beta - ionol). The reaction is preferably effected in an organic solvent, e.g. an ether, especially tetrahydrofuran, an alcohol, or a hydrocarbon and suitable reaction temperatures are between-30 and +80 DEG C. Examples are given for the production of beta-ionylidneeethyl - triphenyl - phosphonium - bromide, -chloride and -iodide. The products are useful as intermediates in the synthesis of biologically active carotenoids of the type of beta-carotene and vitamin A. Specifications 812,522, 813,539, and 817,884 are referred to.
