Abstract: neutralized acrylic acid solution suitable for polymer production is obtained by crystallisation of a crude acrylic acid melt (using known methods), separation of the crystalline acid from the residual melt and dissolution in aqueous alkali. A method for the production of aqueous, partly or completely neutralized acrylic acid (I) solution suitable for the production of acrylic acid polymers involves: (i) single- or multi-stage crystallisation of a crude acrylic acid melt by known methods to give crystalline (I) and an impurity-enriched residual melt; (ii) separation of (I) from the residual melt; and (iii) dissolution of (I) in aqueous alkali solution. An Independent claim is also included for a method for the production of acrylic acid-based superabsorbers by radical polymerisation of an aqueous monomer composition containing at least 50 wt.% neutralized (I) and optionally up to 50 wt.% comonomer(s) (B) and/or up to 30 wt.% crosslinkers (C) (obtained by adding B and/or C to the above solution of pure I) to give a hydrogel, converting this into a hydrogel-forming powder and optionally surface-crosslinking the powder.

Abstract: O.Z. 0050/4043 Finely divided, gel-like, water-swellable copolymers are prepared by copolymerizing (a) 100 parts by weight of water-soluble, monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, (b) from 0.01 to 5 parts by weight of monomers containing two or more ethylenically unsaturated double bonds and (c) from 0 to 20 parts by weight of water-insoluble, monoethylenically unsaturated monomers in 20-80% strength by weight aqueous solution in the presence of a polymerization initiator and from 0.1 to 10% by weight, based on the monomers used in the copolymerization, of a surfactant, by a process in which the monomers are copolymerized in the presence of initially from 0 to 50% by weight of the amount of surfactant to a conversion of not less than 60%, the remaining amount of surfactant is then added to the reaction mixture and the copolymerization is completed and the resulting gel particles dried.
