Abstract: A pneumatic pump manifold disposable system, configured as a cassette, is us ed for the purpose of red cell and plasma apheresis. The cassette (16) integrates a separation device (44) such as a spinning membrane separator, a controller and a fluid flow circuit (42) for the purpose of separating plasma and red cells from the whole blood. The cassette system, with the separation device (44) directly attached without tubing, simplfies the loadi ng of the disposable set into the hardware such as a case (20), and reduces the manufacturing complexity of the set. The system allows for plasma, buffy coat and red cells to be stored in long term storage containers (54, 56 and 58) after a procedure.

Abstract: Blood processing systems and methods convey blood cells from a blood cell source into a blood component collection flow channel that includes a blood cell storage container and an in-line filter to remove leukocytes from blood cells before entering the blood cell storage container. The systems and methods also convey additive solution from an additive solution source into the blood component collection flow channel. The systems and methods alternate the conveyance of blood cells through the filter with the conveyance of additive solution through the filter.

Abstract: Blood processing systems and related methods place first and second fluid pressure actuated pump stations in in-line communication between a source and a destination. The systems and methods apply fluid pressure pump strokes to the first and second pump stations to convey fluid from the source to the destination. The systems and methods switch between a first flow mode and a second flow mode. In the first flow mode, the pump strokes draw a fluid volume into the first pump station from the source and expel a fluid volume from the second pump station to the destination. In the second flow mode, the pump strokes draw a fluid volume into the second pump station from the source and expel a fluid volume from the first pump station to the destination. The systems and methods synchronize the pump strokes so that fluid flow from the source is essentially continuous while fluid flow to the destination is pulsatile.

Abstract: A blood separation system (10) is described. The system comprises a device (14, 18) which, in use, operates to separate whole blood into red blood cells and plasma, a whole blood inlet line (290) for conveying a flow of whole blood into the device, a plasma collection line (292) for conveying a flow of plasma from the device, and a red blood cell collection line (294) for conveying a flow of red blood cells from the device. A first sensing assembly (334) including a first sensor in the plasma collection line is provided which in use operates to detect a characteristic of plasma in the flow of plasma and to generate a first output. A second sensing assembly (336) including a second sensor in the red blood cell collection line is provided which in use operates to detect a characteristic of red blood cells in the flow of red blood cells and to generate a second output. A controller (16) operates to control flows in the plasma collection line and the red blood cell collection line based upon the first and second outputs.
