Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare a high-mol.wt. polycarbonate substantially free from chlorine ion without using toxic phosgene by the melt polycondensation of a dihydroxy compd. with a bisaryl carbonate in the presence of a catalyst comprising a borane complex. CONSTITUTION:The melt polycondensation of a dihydroxy compd. with a bisaryl carbonate is conducted in the presence of a catalyst comprising a borane complexe. As the dihydroxy compd., a compd. of formula I, II, III, or IV (wherein R1, R2, R3, and R4 are each H, 1-8C linear or branched alkyl, or phenyl; X is halogen: n is 0-4; and m is 1-4) is pref. Examples of the borane complexe include those of borane with ammonia, dimethylamine, trimethylamine, dimethylaniline, pyridine, morpholine, pyrrole, and tetrahydrofuran.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an epoxidized block copolymer having a low residual organic solvent content. SOLUTION: A block copolymer composed of blocks of a polymer based on a vinylaromatic compound and blocks of a polymer based on a conjugated diene or a hydrogenated product thereof is mixed with an organic solvent to form an organic solvent solution or slurry having a polymer concentration of 5-50wt.%. The unsaturated C-C bonds present in the polymer blocks in the organic solvent solution or slurry are epoxidized with an epoxidizing agent. The obtained epoxidation solution or slurry is subjected to washing with water and/or neutralization to lower the acid value of the solution or slurry to 5mgKOH/g or below. The epoxidation reaction solution or slurry after being subjected to washing with water and/or neutralization is fed into an evaporator to obtain an epoxidized block copolymer having a residual solvent content of 5,000ppm or below and a gel fraction of 5wt.% or below.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an epoxidized block copolymer having excellent heat stability by an economically profitable process. SOLUTION: A block copolymer composed of blocks of a polymer based on a vinylaromatic hydrocarbon compound and blocks of a polymer based on a conjugated diene compound or a hydrogenated derivative thereof is epoxidized in an organic solvent. Next, 0.005-5 pts.wt., per 100 pts.wt. finally obtained epoxidized block copolymer, phenolic stabilizer and/or phosphorus stabilizer is added to the epoxidation reaction solution containing the epoxidized block copolymer, and the organic solvent is then removed from the epoxidation reaction solution.

CONSTITUTION: This composition is obtained by blending (A) 100 pts.wt. of an epoxy modified block copolymer prepared by epoxidizing a conjugated diene- derived double bond of a block copolymer comprising a block composed of an aromatic vinyl compound (preferably styrene) structural unit and a block composed of a conjugated diene block (preferably butadiene and/or isoprene) structural unit with (B) 50-10,000 pts.wt., preferably 200-2,000 pts.wt. of an organic solvent (preferably toluene). To be concrete, a partially hydrogenated styrene-isoprene block copolymer is preferably used as the block copolymer of the component A. The degree of the epoxidation of the component A is preferably 1-5wt.% of oxirane oxygen concentration.
