    Abstract: 1,223,477. Curing epoxy resins. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 15 Aug., 1968 [23 Aug., 1967], No. 39144/68. Heading C3B. [Also in Division B2] Epoxy resins are cured using a mixture of: (I) a Lewis acid and (II) a phosphorus compound in which R and R 1 are each C 1-10 alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, alkaryl, aralkyl, alkoxyalkyl, alkoxyaryl, hydroxyalkyl, hydroxyaryl, hydroxyaralkyl or alkenyl radicals which may optionally be substituted by halogen, e.g. Cl or Br. Examples of I are: BF 3 or its complexes with amines or ethers, SnCl 4 , SbF 5 , SbCl 5 , or PCl 5 . Examples of II are: vinyl-, methyl-, ethyl-, 2-chloroethyl-, 1,2 - dichloroethyl, propyl, butyl, hydroxymethyl-, 1 - hydroxyethyl, 2 - hydroxypropyl or α - hydroxybenzyl - phosphonic acid or methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, isopropyl-, n-butyl-, iso-butyl-, tert - butyl-, methoxymethyl-, butoxyethyl-, phenyl-, 2 - methylphenyl-, 3 - methylphenyl or 2,4,6 - trichlorophenyl - monoesters of phosphoric acid. I may be used at 0À1 to 5 mole per cent per average epoxide equivalent of the resin. II may be used so as to provide 0À2 to 0À6 hydroxyl equivalents per epoxide equivalent of the resin. Conventional fillers, pigments and dyestuffs may be present. Curing may take place at ambient temperature.

    Abstract: The copolymers described contain from 89.0% to 98.89% of trioxane, from 1.0% to 10.0% of cyclic ethers and/or cyclic formals, and from 0.01% to 1.0% of diglycidyl ether. The cyclic ethers have the formula:- where R1 and R2 each represent an atom of hydrogen or an alkyl gp. of low mol. wt., which may be halogenated, R3 is a methylene or oxymethylene gp., which may have alkyl or halogenated alkyl substituents, and n is a number from 0 to 3. The diglycidyl ethers are derived from unsatd. aliphatic diols contng. from 4-8 C atoms, in either a straight or branched chain.

    Abstract: A solution or dispersion obtained by heating, in trioxane, a polyformal of formula -([-O-A-(OCH2)m-])n-where A is a straight-chained or branched saturated or olefinically unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing at least two carbon atoms and which may contain a halogen-substituted aliphatic side chain, or a cycloaliphatic radical or an aralkyl radical, m is a whole number from 1 to 20 and n is a whole number, is polymerized by cooling once or several times to a temperature at least that of the phase transition from the liquid to the solid phase. The polyformal may have been obtained by homopolymerization of a cyclic formal or copolymerization of a cyclic formal or cyclic ether with trioxane, in the presence of a cationic catalyst, and the copolymerization reaction may be used to produce the solution or dispersion of polyformal in trioxan which is then subjected to the further polymerization. Alternatively the polyformal may be obtained by polycondensation of a dihydric alcohol or a dihydric ol-thiol compound with formaldehyde. Specified catalysts are boron fluoride, its complexes, substituted diazonium salts, other Lewis acids e.g. tin tetrachloride and trimethyl oxonium tetrachloroferriate.

The catalyst may be diluted with an inert medium.
