Water-thinnable paints, in particular electrodeposition paints, which contain the pigment pastes according to the invention give defect-free surfaces and comparable coating thicknesses even on different substrates.

Also claimed are (i) the prodn. of (I) by reacting (A-1) with (A-2) to give an epoxy resin (A), dispersing (A) in water with addn. of emulsifier (B) and olefinic monomer(s) (D-1), and polymerising in presence of a radical initiator; and (ii) coatings obtd. by applying dispersion (I) to a substrate, followed by hardening.

Abstract: Electrocoating bath containing a urethane of the formula R1-NHCOO-R2 where R1 is alkyl or a group of the formula B1-NH-B2-[X-B3]n-, R2 is a group of the formulae -(C2H4O)y-R1 and -(C3H7O) y-R or of the formula R is C1-C18-alkyl, Y is from zero to 4, B1 is hydrogen, alkyl or a group of the formula -COOR2, B2 and B3 can be identical or different and each is C2-C14-alkylene, n is an integer from 0 to 5, preferably from 0 to 2, X is -O-, -S-, -NH- or @N-(C1-C4)-alkyl, R3 is hydrogen or alkyl, alkenyl, hydroxyalkyl, phenyl or alkylphenyl, R4 and R5 can be identical or different and each is hydrogen or C1-C4-alkyl, and A is a direct bond or one of the groups -O-, -CH2O- or -CH2OCO-. The presence of these urethanes in the electrocoating bath reduces the number of surface defects in galvanised surfaces.

Abstract: Curing agents (A) for isocyanate-curable resins (B) which have an amine number of from 20 to 150 mg of KOH/g, a maximum OH number of 20 mg KOH/g and contain, per molecule, at least two capped isocyanate groups which are reactive under the curing conditions, are obtained by reacting A) an amine which contains at least one ss-hydroxyalkyl group per molecule, as an OH number of from 100 to 1200 mg KOH/g and an amine number of from 100 to 1200 mg of KOH/g and optionally also contains NHCO groups, optionally blended with another OH- and/or NH-functional compound, with B) a partially capped polyisocyanate, optionally blended with an at least bifunctional, OH- and/or NH-reactive compound. These curing agents, if necessary after neutralisation, are readily dispersible in aqueous systems and frequently have a stability-increasing action in water-borne paint formulations.

Abstract: Curable compounds carrying basic nitrogen groups and essentially comprising structural units derived from A) a compound containing on average at least one terminal 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane group per molecule, with B) a disecondary amine containing hydroxyl groups in the beta -position to the secondary amino groups, it also being possible for this amine to contain blocked primary amino groups, and optionally C) a bifunctional amine containing at least one free primary amino group and optionally at least one secondary amino group, are used, in particular, in surface coating preparations, especially in electrodeposition coating compositions. The coatings obtainable using these compositions have, in particular optimised interlayer adhesion.
