Abstract: The characteristic features in the hydroformylation of olefinically unsatd. cpds. to give prods. non- (or only slightly)-soluble in water are that (i) the olefinic cpd. is in homogeneous phase in a polar organic solvent in presence of a catalyst system comprising (a) an Rh carbonyl cpd. and (b) a solvent- and also water-soluble salt of a sulphonated or carboxylated organic mono- or poly-phosphine; (ii) reaction is at 60-180 degrees C/2-35 MPa with CO and H2; and (iii) prod. recovery is by distilling off the organic solvent and separating off the catalyst system from the distn. residue using water.

Abstract: The sulphonation of arylphosphines, that is mono-, di-, oligo- and polyphosphines which contain at least one aromatic radical which can be sulphonated, is carried out according to the invention in the presence of a Lewis acid. The novel process is distinguished by avoidance of side reactions, in particular the formation of phosphine oxides. When working up the sulphonation mixture, the Lewis acid can be removed together with the sulphuric acid.
