    Abstract: A system and method for precisely registering and synchronizing data sets on a recording media having a prerecorded servo pattern. The recording media is subject to continuing movement for reading and/or writing the data sets, interrupted by stopping at the end of a selected data set and restarting. During the continuing movement of the recording media, a detector coupled to the servo system continuously reads linear position registration data modulated into the prerecorded servo pattern. An interpolator interpolates the prerecorded registration data to provide precision registration information for the data sets. Upon the drive stopping the recording media, then back hitching the media and the movement restarting, selected read and interpolated registration information is provided. The detector again reads and interpolates the prerecorded registration data, and a comparator compares the again read and interpolated registration information to the provided read and interpolated registration information and any predetermined offset, and indicates a comparison match. A data formatter coupled to the comparator, responsive to the comparison match indication, synchronizes the reading and/or writing of data sets on the recording media.

    Abstract: An calibration apparatus operates in multiple calibration modes of a multi-mode information storage system such as an optical disk drive to calibrate the drive in the multiple write modes. An event processing and measurement circuit is configurable in multiple configurations that each correspond to a different calibration measurement. Each configuration concurrently measures one or more parameters of readback data written to an optical disk by the optical disk drive operating in a particular write mode. A qualification circuit selects valid measurements for two different parameters or for two different qualification of the same parameter. A summation circuit sums valid measurements of each parameter measured and counts the number of measurements summed for each parameter. The calibration apparatus calculates average values for the measured parameters from the sums and counts, and then calibrates the multi-mode optical disk drive for its current write mode based on the average values.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a magnetic tape media having addressing data information superimposed on prerecorded track following servo information. The servo information is recorded in magnetic flux transition patterns defining at least one longitudinal servo track. A servo burst pattern of at least two repeated pairs of non-parallel magnetic flux transitions is provided, at least one of which transitions is slanted or otherwise continuously longitudinally variable across the width of the servo track. At least two transitions of the repeated pairs are shifted longitudinally with respect to other of the transitions, the shifted transitions comprising the superimposed addressing data information. Also disclosed is a magnetic tape media having prerecorded combined servo and data information recorded in repeated pairs of magnetic flux dual transitions, at least one of the repeated pairs of dual transitions having a different width with respect to other of the transitions, the different width transitions comprising data information.

    Abstract: A write-once optical disk data recorder automatically calibrates a laser during a write data operation and using write pulses focussed to a disk. First, the laser is calibrated using a non-focussed laser beam. Each sector of the disk has a laser checking or test area, such as an automatic laser power correction field (ALPC) of two byte lineal extent. During a first write operation after a power up or disk load, a pulse width modulated (PWM) laser test signal is recorded using a laser power level set using the non-focussed laser beam and an indicated desired recording power level on the disk. The recorded laser test signal is read back. The length of the read back laser test signal is measured. The measured length is then compared with a desired length of the PWM laser test signal that indicates a desired laser power level. That is, as laser recording power levels increase, a resultant recorded signal grows in size. This property is used to measure laser power for calibrating laser operation.

    Abstract: A circuit for simultaneously detecting both MO and ROM signals reflected from an optical disk so that both signals are present and useable without switching from one to the other. The circuit eliminates switching time and switching transients. Two photodetectors are arranged to sense P and S components of polarized light in order to stimulate a differential amplifier and produce an output representative of MO recorded data. A second amplifier is connected to at least one of the photodetectors to produce an output representative of ROM recorded data and also representative of defects in the MO portion of the optical disk.

    Abstract: Provided are a computer program product, system, method, and data structure for compressing an input data stream. A determination is made of consecutive data units in the input data stream that match consecutive data units in a history buffer. A copy pointer symbol indicates a copy pointer symbol referencing previously received data units in the history buffer. A determination is made of a relative displacement count in the history buffer at which the number of matching consecutive data units start. A determination is made of a range of relative displacement counts comprising one of a plurality of ranges of displacement counts including the determined relative displacement count. A determination is made of the encoding scheme associated with the determined range. An encoding of the relative displacement count is determined from the determined encoding scheme. The determined encoding of the relative displacement count is indicated in the copy pointer.

    Abstract: A determination is made as to whether at least two consecutive data units in an input data stream match consecutive data units in a history buffer 112 of previously received data units. If so, a copy pointer symbol is generated referencing previously received data units and indicating the determined number of consecutive data units. A relative displacement count at which the match starts is determined and a compression encoding of the count is performed using variable length code tables 118, 120 (e.g. Huffman tables) for inclusion in the copy pointer. The variable length code tables may include a prefix indicating a number of bits used to indicate the displacement count (see figures 7-9). A minimum displacement variable length code table 120 may be used for the case where the number of consecutive data units is a minimum (two) and the relative displacement count is less than a predetermined value.
