SOLUTION: The optically transparent material contains a cycloolefin copolymer containing (a) a repeating unit derived from a specific cycloolefin and (b) a repeating unit having an alkoxysilyl group or aryloxysilyl group derived from specific other cycloolefin or hydrolyzed condensed residue of the above groups and the liquid crystal display substrate material contains the optically transparent material. Preferably, the repeating unit (a) contains a specific amount of a repeating unit having a norbornene substituted with a 3-8C alkyl group as a structural unit and/or a specific amount of a repeating unit containing ester group or imide group as at least one of the substituent group of the cycloolefin. The ratio of the repeating unit (a) to (b) is preferably within a specific range.
