    Abstract: The invention described is a packet switched communications system in which a station communicates with at least one user over downlink communication channel, the downlink communication channel being divided into a plurality of frames and each flame including a plurality of data packets. Each data packet is directed to a predetermined user and includes transmission power control information for said user. An extended transmission power control information field is provided in at least one data packet in every frame, which includes transmission power control information for at least one other user of the communication system.

    Abstract: In a UMTS, the AICH is arranged to send, in addition to a signal acknowledging that a preamble from a mobile is at an acceptable strength, an additional signal indicating that the mobile is not currently permitted to send its message; this may apply when the BTS does not have hardware resources available. If the BTS can predict when the hardware will become available, the additional signal can include a time out (T) after which the mobile system can send its message signal.

    Abstract: According to the present invention there is further provided radio resource allocation apparatus for allocating radio resources for transmission of signals along a plurality of channels to and from a node, the node comprising a transmitter/receiver for transmitting and receiving signals to and from the node and a channel selection device for selecting the channels along which different signal transmissions are to be routed, and a channel allocation device for controlling the allocation of channels by the channel selection device, the channel selection device comprising first means responsive to incoming signal transmissions passing through the node to produce a data rate signal, a bit energy to noise power ratio signal and a classification signal, second means responsive to the output of the first means to generate a maximum load parameter signal and third means responsive to an output from the channel selection device providing channel status indications and to the output of the first and second means to process the received signals in accordance with a predetermined algorithm and to feed the channel selection device with channel selection signals accordingly, wherein the algorithm of the third means includes resolving the capacity equation alpha current - alpha new ≤ alpha max = 100% - eta , where alpha current is the current load of node as given by the sum of the resource consumption of all services that are served by the node, alpha new is the additional load capacity required of the node, alpha max is the maximum load which the node is capable of and eta is a reserve safety factor, whereby if the capacity boundary of the equation is exceeded, the generation of said channel selection signals is inhibited and a resource consumption negotiation takes place following which the capacity equation is again resolved, when the boundaries imposed by the capacity equation are not exceeded, the channel selection signals are transmitted to the channel selection device.

    Abstract: A time division multiple access communication system is disclosed, in which down link data are transmitted over a data channel in repeated time frames each containing a plurality of time slots. Down link set up information is transmitted over a control channel to indicate from which time slot a user terminal should extract data. Each frame on the data channel includes a user packet flag to indicate whether or not each time slot in the frame contains data. Each user terminal is responsive to the set up information and to the user packet flags to extract data from its assigned time slot in those frames which the slot is indicated to contain data.

    Abstract: The invention relates to random access packet transmission in a packet switched mobile network. It is an object to provide a new and improved approach to avoid problems of overload handling for a random access packet transmission in packet switched mobile networks and in particular, to limit the transmit delay of at least some selected data flows even in case of a long-term overload situation. It is suggested to employ on a respective random access packet transmission channel an admission control functionality (1a, 2a, 3a, 4a, 5a) depending on a request for the adding of a new data flow and/or to employ on the respective random access packet transmission channel a congestion control functionality (1c, 2c, 3c) depending on varying environments.
