    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a positively chargeable single layer type electrophotographic sensitive body superior in electrophotographic characteristics by using a combination of an azo compound represented by a specified formula and a tetraphenylthiophene derivative represented by a specified formula. CONSTITUTION:The single-layer type photosensitive layer formed on a conductive substrate contains the azo compound represented by formula I and the tetraphenylthiophene derivative represented by formula II. In formulae I and II, A is a coupler residue; each of R1 and R2 is optionally substituted alkyl or aralkyl or aryl, and each may combine with each other to form a ring together with the N atom; and each of n, m, and l is 0 or 1, and satisfies the following expression: l>=m>=n. The azo compound of formula I serves mainly as an electric charge generating material and the derivative of formula II serves mainly as a charge transfer material, thus permitting the photosensitive body to be produced at low cost.

    Abstract: NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (R1, R2 are H, alkyl, aryl; m, n are 3-10). EXAMPLE:9,10-Dicyano-1,2,4,5,6,8-hexahydro-3,7-di-tert.-bytylphe-nanth rene. PREPARATION:A synthetic intermediate of phthalocyanines. Phthalocyanines are used as functional materials such as an electroconductive material, a photoconductive material, an oxidation catalyst, or an electrochromism material. They have spectroscopic absorption in the near-infrared region and high solubility in organic solvents. PREPARATION:The condensation reaction of carbonyl compounds of formula II and formula III with malonitrile is followed by cyclization of the product to give a compound of formula IV. The compound is diazotized to give a diazonium salt, which is allowed to react with a cyano compound to give the compound of formula I.

    Abstract: NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by formula I (R is 1-20C alkyl; * is asymmetric carbon). EXAMPLE:6-Hydroxynaphthalene-2-carboxylic acid-(2'-propoxy)propyl ester. USE:An intermediate for optically active liquid crystal compound. A compound produced by using a compound shown by formula I becomes extremely excellent ferroelectric liquid crystal and is photochemically and chemically stable extremely. PREPARATION:According to the reaction formula, 2,6-hydroxynaphtha lenecarboxylic acid shown by formula II is benzylated to give a compound shown by formula III (Bz is benzyl). Then this compound is treated with thionyl chloride or oxalic acid chloride to give a compound shown by formula IV. Further the compound shown by formula IV is reacted with any of various optically active 2-alkoxypropanol to give a compound shown by formula V, which is then debenzylated in the presence of Pd/C to give a compound shown by formula I.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a near-infrared absorber which is excellent as near-infrared absorbing coloring matter and has a proper degree of solubility, compatibility with resin, and excellent durability, by using a specified diphthalocyanine. CONSTITUTION:This near-infrared absorber comprises a diphthalocyanine of formula I [wherein the benzene rings A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H each may be substituted by (substituted) alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, alkylamino, arylamino, etc.; [Met] is Si, Sn, Ge or Ti] or its tautomer. This absorber has excellent durability and processability. It can be incorporated into resin or it can dye resin. An optical recording medium containing it has good durability and sensitivity. A compound of formula I can be obtained by reacting 1-4 compounds of formula II or III (wherein the benzene ring may be substituted as in formula I) with an alkali metal alkoxide through heating in an alcohol to give an alkali metal salt of phthalocyanine, which is then reacted with, e. g., tetrachlorotin or tetrachlorogermanium.
