    Abstract: A male electrical terminal (40) includes an elongated planar body portion (42), a terminating portion (26) extending rearwardly of the body portion and a contact portion (24) extending forwardly of the body portion. The body portion includes an enlarged retention section (44) that is twisted relative to the plane of the body portion. An electrical connector (12) includes a housing (14) with terminal-receiving passages (41) each including opposing side walls (41a) for embracing opposite sides of the body portion (42) of a respective one of the terminals (40). Each passage (41) also includes an oblique portion (41b) intersecting the opposing side walls for embracing the twisted retention section (44) of the respective terminal.

    Abstract: A terminal alignment system is provided for an electrical connector assembly (10) disclosed as an insulation displacement type connector for terminating a plurality of insulated conductors (14) of a multi-conductor cable (12). The connector includes a dielectric housing (16) having a plurality of terminal-receiving passageways (54, 56) for the insertion thereinto of a plurality of terminals (18) in a given insertion direction (A). Each terminal (18) includes an insulation displacement section (44) at one end for piercing the insulation about one of the conductors, a contact section (46) at an opposite end for mating with a mating terminal, and an intermediate securing section (48) between the ends for securing the terminal in a respective one of the passageways. The insulation displacement section (44) of each terminal (18) includes a notch (52) facing in the insertion direction (A). The housing includes a rib (60) for interengagement with each notch. Therefore, upon insertion of the terminals into the passageways, the notch of each terminal engages a respective rib to accurately align the insulation displacement section of the terminal prior to termination thereof to one of the insulated conductors. The terminal notches (52) and the housing ribs (60) are located within the bounds (50) of the insulation displacement sections (44).

    Abstract: A connector uses a plurality of individual terminal assemblies to form a high-density connector. The terminal assemblies all have insulative body portions that support arrays of signal terminals and ground terminals or ground members. The terminals all have their own associated body portions which are supported by the insulative body portions and contact portions that extend out from a front, or mating face, of the assemblies. The terminal contact portions and include flexing portions formed therewith which are disposed between the terminal body and contact portions. The terminals further include insulative support members that are applied to the terminals and which serve to define the contact and flexing portions of the terminals. The support members are fixed within a carrier, such as a shroud member, which is not attached to any one portion of the connector. The support members permit the terminals and shroud to move as a single unit and flex in different directions, relative to the insulative body portions that support the terminals.

    Abstract: When a contact structure is moved from an initial position to a final position, each of the forwardly extending lead-in portions of the male terminal is effective to gradually and uniformly deflect a respective one of the contact portions of the spring arms. The normal force between the contact portions of the spring arm and the upper and lower surfaces of the male terminal is caused to gradually increase. The lead-in portion of the male terminal has a pair of diverging, non-parallel generally non-deflecting split beams. Inwardly facing, laterally offset, opposing camming portions are adapted to initially engage and gradually deflect the contact portions as the contact structure is moved toward its final position. The gradual and uniform deflection of the contact portions of the spring arms results in a minimal insertion force mating contact structure. The gradual increase in normal force results in a high contact normal force between the male and female terminals. Greater wiping action over a greater length of the conductor is achieved.
