    Abstract: A backplane signal connector assembly (20) includes a header connector (22) adapted for mounting on a backplane and a receptacle connector (24) adapted for mounting on a daughter printed circuit board. Each connector includes a conductive housing (26, 58) having a cavity (28, 60) for receiving at least two signal terminals (38, 70, 72) and at least one ground terminal (40, 74). The signal terminal has an insert molded insulating mounting body (44, 76) about a portion thereof to provide a module for mounting in the cavity to insulate the terminal from the conductive housing. The ground terminal is in direct conductive engagement with the housing. The terminals are stamped and formed metal components. At least one ground clip (34, 62, 64) is mounted on each conductive housing in direct conductive engagement therewith and is adapted for commoning to a ground on the respective backplane and daughter printed circuit board, whereby the housing establishes a primary ground reference for the connector.

Preferably, said signal terminals (28) and ground terminals (30) are positioned in an alternating array along each side of the slot means, with each signal terminal being aligned with a ground terminal or each ground terminal being aligned with a signal terminal on opposite transverse sides of the slot, and the ground terminals having significantly larger transverse areas than the signal terminals.

    Abstract: A high performance card edge connector (10) includes a housing (16) with an elongated printed circuit card receiving slot (38) in a top wall (18). Terminals (44,46,48) are mounted in transverse cavities (28) intersected by the slot. Alternate cavity portions (28A) receive a pair of signal terminals (44,46) and interspersed alternate cavity portions (28B) receive single ground terminals (48). Each terminal includes a downwardly extending board contact portion (52,64,74) for connection to a printed circuit board and a card contact portion (56,68,80) in the slot for engagement with a contact pad of an inserted card. Each signal terminal pair may be flanked by two ground terminals on the same side of the slot and may be transversely opposite a ground terminal on the opposite side of the slot. A uniform identical cavity configuration permits each cavity portion to receive either a ground terminal or a pair of signal terminals.

    Abstract: When a contact structure is moved from an initial position to a final position, each of the forwardly extending lead-in portions of the male terminal is effective to gradually and uniformly deflect a respective one of the contact portions of the spring arms. The normal force between the contact portions of the spring arm and the upper and lower surfaces of the male terminal is caused to gradually increase. The lead-in portion of the male terminal has a pair of diverging, non-parallel generally non-deflecting split beams. Inwardly facing, laterally offset, opposing camming portions are adapted to initially engage and gradually deflect the contact portions as the contact structure is moved toward its final position. The gradual and uniform deflection of the contact portions of the spring arms results in a minimal insertion force mating contact structure. The gradual increase in normal force results in a high contact normal force between the male and female terminals. Greater wiping action over a greater length of the conductor is achieved.
