Abstract: Method and apparatus for estimating reverse link loading in a wireless communication system. In the present invention, the reverse link signals are passed through notch filters such that no energy (or energy of negligible amounts) is transmitted in these areas of the reverse link frequency band. At the base station, the unloaded cell energy is estimated by measuring the energy in the areas where the reverse link signals are notched. The in band energy is then compared to the energy in the notched portions of the reverse link band and based on this ratio cell capacity is determined.

Abstract: A spread-spectrum communication system provides an effective signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of received orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) slots in the presence of timing errors. Effective SNR can serve as a diagnostic tool for determining whether there was a timing error when a measured packet error rate (PER) remains high, and a predicted PER from the effective SNR remains low. A loop can use the effective SNR to control a time reference used by an OFDM decoder.

Abstract: An apparatus for selecting a best serving sector in a code division multiple access (CDMA) communication system. A comparator compares a plurality of signal levels received from a plurality of active sectors with a signal level of a current serving sector to produce a difference. A delta generator is coupled to the comparator that generates a delta credit for each of the plurality of active sectors based on the difference. An accumulator is coupled to the delta generator and accumulates a plurality of delta credits to produce an accumulated total credit. A best sector identifier that is coupled to the accumulator identifies the best serving sector from the accumulated total credit.

Abstract: A system for providing an accurate prediction of a signal-to-interference noise ratio is described. The system includes a first circuit for receiving a signal transmitted across a channel via an external transmitter. A second circuit generates a sequence of estimates of signal-to-interference noise ratio based on the received signal. A third circuit determines a relationship between elements of the sequence of estimates. A fourth circuit employs the relationship to provide a signal-to-interference noise ratio prediction for a subsequently received signal. In the illustrative embodiment, the inventive system further includes a circuit for generating a data rate request message based on the signal-to-noise ratio prediction. A special transmitter transmits the data rate request message to the external transmitter. In the specific embodiment, the relationship between elements of the sequence of estimates is based on an average of the elements of the sequence of estimates. The third circuit includes a bank of filters for computing the average. The bank of filters includes finite impulse response filters. Coefficients of the transfer functions associated with each filter in the bank of filters are tailored for different fading environments. The different fading environments include different Rayleigh fading environments, one environment associated with a rapidly moving system, a second environment associated with a slow moving system, and a third system associated with a system moving at a medium velocity. A selection circuit is connected to each of the filter banks and selects an output from one of the filters in the filter bank. The selected output is associated with a filter having a transfer function most suitable to a current fading environment.

An actual signal, representing a waveform channelized both in time and in code is generated by, e.g., an exemplary HDR communication system. The test equipment then generates an estimate of offsets between parameters of the actual waveform and the ideal waveform, and the offsets are used to compensate the actual waveform. The test equipment then evaluates various waveform quality measurements utilizing the compensated actual waveform and the corresponding ideal waveform. Definitions of the various waveform quality measurements as well as conceptual and practical examples of processing of the actual waveform and the corresponding ideal waveform by the test equipment are disclosed. The disclosed method and apparatus may be extended to any waveform channelized both in time and in code regardless of the equipment that generated the waveform.

Abstract: An optimum combiner that reduces the amount of interference imposed upon a first base station (102) by transmissions of other base stations within the same communication system. Two antennas (112, 114) are used to receive transmissions within a receiving station (110). A rake receiver is coupled to each antenna (112, 114). By optimally combining the signals that are received by each independent finger of the rake receiver, interference that is correlated between a finger associated with the first antenna (112) and a finger associated with the second antenna (114) can be minimized with respect to the desired signal. Optimum combining requires determination of optimum combining coefficients. A max-ratio combining algorithm may be substituted for the optimal combining algorithm depending upon interference characteristics.
