Abstract: To reduce the power consumption of a remote unit in a dispatch system the remote unit enters a dormant state. A base station transmits a forward link broadcast signal and monitors a common access channel. A first remote unit continually receives and decodes the forward link broadcast signal and determines whether said forward link broadcast signal comprises active signals. If the remote unit determines that the forward link broadcast signal comprises no active signals for some a duration T1, the first remote unit enters a dormant mode. In the dormant mode the remote unit sporadically receives and decodes said forward link broadcast signal. If this remote unit or any other remote unit on the same net presses a push to talk button, it transmits a message on the common access channel. In response, every remote unit on the net which is in a dormant state exits the dormant state and continually monitors the forward link broadcast signal.

Abstract: A system and method (100) for independently downloading a main program and optional features (124) into a set of storage locations (114) of a wireless communication device (102) uses a memory (123) to store the main program and a set of selected optional features (124). An identification element (160) associated with one in the set of selected optional features (162) enables the main program (134) to interact with the one in the set of selected optional features (124-130). A programmer (not shown) programs the selected optional feature programs (124-130) into the memory (116) by locating a storage location in the memory (116). An indicator indicates when the set of selected optional features has been stored in the memory. The memory can further contain a linking element and a pointer (162-166) to identify storage locations in the memory. The invention allows the set of selected optional features to be stored after the main program is stored in the memory.

Abstract: A system and method for controlling software applications on one or more wireless devices where each wireless device is in selective communication with one or more application managing servers over a wireless network. Each wireless device has one or more selectively executable resident software applications and at least one software application requires a valid license for each execution, and upon the attempted execution of a software application, the wireless device determines if a license is present. If a license is not present, the wireless device selectively prompts, either automatically or at the direction of the user of the wireless device, an application managing server for transmission of a license, receives the transmitted license, and installs the license on the wireless device such that the software application is again licensed and executable.

Si no hay una licencia presente/vigente, el dispositivo inalámbrico insta de forma selectiva, sea automáticamente sea bajo la dirección del usuario del dispositivo inalámbrico, a un servidor administrador de la aplicación, a que transmita una licencia, recibe la licencia transmitida, e instala la licencia en el dispositivo inalámbrico de manera tal que la aplicación de software está nuevamente bajo licencia y puede ser ejecutada.
