Abstract: In the present invention, the slave base station attains synchronization with the reference base station through messages transmitted from and received by a mobile station either in the soft handoff region between the reference base station and the slave base station or within a range which allows the mobile station to communicate with the slave base station. When the mobile station is not in communication with both the reference base station and the slave base station, then the round trip delay between the mobile station and the reference base station is measured by the reference base station. The reference base station communicates the PN code used by the mobile station over the reverse link to the slave base station. The slave base station acquires the signal from the mobile station and determines when the signal from the mobile station arrives. The slave base station then makes an estimate as to the length of the delay between transmission of a signal from the mobile station to the slave base station. Based upon these measurements and estimates, the slave base station determines the error which is present in the slave base station system time.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing orthogonal spot beams (14a, 14b), sectors (16a, 16b), and picocells (18). The transmissions can be made orthogonal by using orthogonal auxiliary pilots and different Walsh traffic channels in adjacent areas. In accordance with the IS-95 standard, the pilot signal is covered with the 64-chip Walsh sequence zero. The 64-chip all zeros Walsh sequence can be designated as P and the 64-chip all one sequence can be designated as M. In the present invention, additional pilot signals can be provided by concatenating 64-chip all zeros P and all ones M sequences. Thus, for two pilot signals, pilot Walsh sequences of PP and PM can be used. For four pilot signals, pilot Walsh sequences of PPPP, PMPM, PPMM, and PMMP can be used. The present invention can be extended such that any required number of pilot Walsh sequences can be generated by substituting each bit in an K-bit Walsh sequence with the 64-chip all zeros P or all ones M sequence depending on the value of that bit.

Abstract: In a communications system including a set of base stations (14, 16, 18, 20) in communication with a remote unit (10), a technique is provided for centrally controlling transmission power. In accordance with this technique, a reverse link frame of data is first received from the remote unit (10) at each of the set of base stations (14, 16, 18, 20). The base stations (14, 16, 18, 20) determine a frame quality indication corresponding to the received reverse link frame of data and transmit the frame quality indication to a system controller (22, 24). The system controller (22, 24) then calculates, based on the frame quality indication from each of the set of base stations (14, 16, 18, 20), an aggregated frame quality indication corresponding to the received reverse link frame of data, and based on the aggregated frame quality indication calculates an absolute reverse threshold value. The absolute reverse threshold value is then provided to each of the set of base stations (14, 16, 18, 20), and each of the set of base stations (14, 16, 18, 20) provides a power control command for the remote unit (10) based on a comparison between the frame quality indication determined at the base station and the absolute reverse threshold value.

Abstract: The present invention is a novel and improved method for providing broadcast short message services (SMS) in a communication network. It is an objective of the present invention to provide a method and apparatus that insures the successful transmission of the broadcast message while minimizing the impact of providing the short messaging service on overall system capacity. Messages to be broadcast to a group of users are provided by broadcast page generator (20), to a braoadcast message buffer (24). The timing of the the message transmissions is controlled by a page transmit controller (34), and the message is modulated on to an appropriate channel by modulator (26).

Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling transmission power in a variable rate communication system is disclosed. The method disclosed provides for a closed loop power control method. A first remote station controls the transmission power of a second remote station by transmitting a rate dependent power control signal to the second remote communication station. Since only the second communication knows its transmission rate a priori, it must determine its course of action in accordance with both the received power control signal and the knowledge of its transmission rate.
