Abstract: A method is provided to manufacture a drill bit (30, fig 3) having ribs extending from the body of the bit. The method includes adhering a quantity of abrasive particles and a first matrix material 40 to a vertical portion of a mold cavity corresponding to at least one of the ribs. A further quantity of abrasive particles and a second matrix material 34 are then loaded into the other portions of the mold cavity. The mold contents are heated to form an impregnated drill bit. The vertical portion may correspond to the gage region 48 of the bit. The mold may be infiltrated with a binder.

Abstract: A drill bit (30, fig 3) includes a body having a lower end face for engaging a rock formation. The end face has raised ribs 34 extending from the face of the bit body and separated by a channels therebetween. At least one of the ribs has a cutting portion 42, 44, 46 comprising a first diamond impregnated matrix material 43 and at least a portion of a gage surface region 48 of the rib comprising a second diamond impregnated matrix material 40 that is harder than the first diamond impregnated material. A superabrasive element 66 may be affixed to the gage region. An alternative composition for a drill bit and a method of manufacturing a drill bit are also disclosed.
