    Abstract: An optical pickup including a light source for radiating a light beam, a diffraction element for separating a light beam radiated from the light source into at least three beams, namely a main beam and two side beams, an objective lens for converging the light beams separated by the diffraction element on a signal recording surface of the optical recording medium, a light receiving unit having a four-segment first light receiving portion for receiving the main beam reflected by the recording surface of the optical recording medium and second and third light receiving portions arranged on both sides of the first light receiving portion for receiving the side beams reflected by the recording surface of the optical recording medium, and a calculation unit for generating a first tracking signal based on respective outputs of the first light receiving portion and for generating a second tracking signal based on outputs of the second and third light receiving portions.

    Abstract: A signal reproducing system for use in an optical disc player comprises a photodetector including at least first and second photodetecting elements which are so disposed that a beam spot is formed on the first and second photodetecting elements by a light beam caused to impinge upon and reflected at an optical record disc and are aligned along a direction of movement of a diffraction pattern appearing in the beam spot in accordance with a record track on the optical record disc, a phase shifter for varying at least a phase of one of first and second output signals obtained respectively based on detection outputs of the first and second photodetecting elements, a switch for causing the first and second output signals selectively to pass through the phase shifter in response to a direction of movement of the record track in relation to the light beam incident upon the optical record disc, and a mixer operative to add one of the first and second output signals derived from the phase shifter to the other of the first and second output signals so as to produce a reproduced information signal.

    Abstract: A releasable cover locking device associated with a cover of a record player of the type in which a record disk is rotated during a reproduction operation when power is supplied to the record player, includes a locking mechanism having a locking lever biased about a shaft to a locking position to lock the cover into a closed position; a first release mechanism including a release link rotatably mounted on the shaft for biasing the locking lever to an unlocked position, a reciprocable rod connected to the release link and an electromagnetic plunger for actuating the reciprocable rod when power is supplied to the apparatus and when the rotational speed of the record disk falls below a predetermined value wherein the release link biases the locking lever to the unlocked position; and a second release mechanism including an arm rotatably mounted on the shaft for biasing the locking lever to the unlocked position, a stop lever connected to the arm through an operating link, a positioning mechanism for positioning the arm into opposing relation to the locking lever when the power supplied to the record player is interrupted so that the stop lever can be actuated to cause the arm to bias the locking lever to the unlocked position and to position the arm out of the opposing relation when power is supplied to the record player so that the arm cannot bias the locking lever to the unlocked position.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lessen a count of special jigs for maintenance, etc., as much as possible by utilizing components constituting a recording medium-reproducing apparatus. SOLUTION: In the reproducing apparatus, an engaging hole 24 is formed in an upper plate 21a of a mechanical deck cover 5, and moreover, the mechanical deck cover 5 separated from a mechanical desk 3 is erected to a mechanical deck-mounting stage 4 to engage a mounting element 14 formed at the mechanical deck 3 with the engaging hole 24 of the mechanical deck cover 5. A lower front edge part of a right side wall 7 of the mechanical deck 3 is loaded onto a front panel 6. The mechanical deck 3 is held in an inclined state to the mechanical deck-mounting stage 4 without cutting an electric connection to the stage 4.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read out data from a DVD(digital video disc) and a CD having different thickness of substrate using a single optical pickup. SOLUTION: A CD 10 is irradiated with light through a laser diode 41, a laser light grating 42, a beam splitter 43, and an optical lens 44. A laser light reflected on the CD 10 passes through the optical lens 44 and the beam splitter 43 before impinging on a photodiode 61. Since the substrate is thin and the optical lens 44 has number of aperture NA as high as 0.6 in order to reproduce a DVD recorded with data at high density, it is susceptible to aberration at the time of reading a CD 10. In order to prevent the effect of aberration at the time of reading a CD 10, relatively small and large (3-16μm) light receiving sections are formed such that the photodiode 61 detects only the returning light for NA up to about 0.3 and the light is not detected substantially for high NA.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reproduce plural kinds of optical disks having different track pitches and recording pits in size by adjusting a spherical aberration to correspond to the thickness of a substrate of a recording medium and a track pitch. SOLUTION: A 1st optical disk having a thick substrate and a 2nd optical disk having a thin substrate are irradiated with a laser beam having a prescribed wavelength to perform reproduction by an optical disk reproducing device. Now, an objective lens 7 having a prescribed numerical aperture is provided, so as to accurately reproduce small recording pits formed on the 2nd optical disk. On the other hand, when the 1st optical disk is reproduced by using this lens 7, a spherical aberration corresponding to a substrate thickness error is generated, and hence a beam spot becomes blurred. Consequently, the beam spot becomes optimum for the 1st optical disk, and hence any spherical aberration is not generated at the reproducing time. Then, a cutoff frequency of a spatial frequency is changed to a value close to reproduction of the 1st optical disk.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To reproduce information from plural kinds of optical disks having different base plate thicknesses by irradiating with a laser beam on the numerical aperture responding to the thickness of the base plate of an optical disk. CONSTITUTION: A disk discriminating circuit 4 detects the base plate thickness of an optical disk 1 mounted and supplies the detection output, which indicates whether the mounted optical disk is a first optical disk having a thicker base plate or the mounted disk is a second optical disk having a thinner base plate, to a numerical aperture variable control section 14. The section 14 controls a numerical aperture varying section 16 in accordance with the detection output from the circuit 4. Thus, the numerical aperture of an objective lens 7 is varied by the section 16 which shields a portion of the laser beam from the lens 7 so that the numerical aperture responding to the disk base plate thickness.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent dust or the like in air from being stuck to an objective lens by providing a lens protector with a stop part which is projected toward an optical disk and has an aperture part whose area is narrower than the effective area of the objective lens. CONSTITUTION:A laser beam LB emitted from an objective lens 24 toward an optical disk 33 is gradually narrowed and is converged; and since a stop part 39b of a lens protector 39 is projected toward the optical disk, light emitted from the objective lens 24 and light made incident on the objective lens 24 are not intercepted though the area of an aperture part 40 of the stop part 39b is made smaller than the effective area of the objective lens 24 in accordance with the extent of this projection. The area of the aperture part 40 of the lens protector 39 is smaller than the effective area of the objective lens 24, and the projecting stop part 39b of the lens protector 39 cylindrically covers input/output light of the objective lens 24. Thus, dust or the like in air is hardly stuck to the objective lens.
