Abstract: The invention relates to a method of deoxygenation of tall oil as well as methods for the production of aliphatic hydrocarbons and polymerizable monomers from tall oil. Sulphurous crude tall oil (5) together with hydrogen gas (6) is fed into a reactor (1) comprising a catalyst bed (2, 3). The oil is catalytically deoxygenated by hydrogen in the bed by use of a sulfided metal catalyst, e.g. a Ni-MoS catalyst. The flow exiting the reactor is cooled down and a hydrocarbon-bearing liquid phase (10) is separated from a gas phase (18), followed by subjecting the liquid phase to distillation (14) for removal of useless aromatic hydrocarbons and then to steam cracking (4) to form a product containing olefins such as ethylene or propylene. By regulation of the deoxygenation temperature to be at least 270°C but less than 360°C the yield is rich in linear and cyclic aliphates that usefully turn to olefins in the steam cracking, while formation of napthalenes is reduced.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing aromatic hydrocarbons, which are suitable for the production of terephthalic acid, from tall oil-based raw material. According to the invention, the raw material that contains tall oil or its fraction is catalytically deoxygenated with hydrogen, and one or more aromatic hydrocarbons (A) that can be converted into terephthalic acid are separated from the deoxygenated reaction yield (10). The deoxygenation catalyst is preferably a NiMo catalyst and, in addition, a cracking catalyst can be used, such as an acidic zeolite catalyst. The separated hydrocarbon is preferably p-xylene, o-xylene or p-cymene. According to the invention, these can be converted by oxidation and, when needed, by a re-arrangement reaction into terephthalic acid that is suitable for the source material of the manufacture of bio-based polyethylene terephthalate.

Abstract: The invention relates to use of polylactide (PLA) as an extruded polymer coating on paper or board intended for the production of containers and packages, which are heated in a stove or microwave oven. According to the invention a polyfunctional cross-linking agent, such as trialkyl isocyanureate (TAIC), is blended with PLA, and the extruded coating layer is subjected to cross-linking electron beam (EB) radiation. PLA may be used as such or blended with another biodegradable polyester such as polybutylene succinate (PBS). EB radiation has been found to improve adhesion of the coating to the paper or board substrate, heat-sealability of the coating, and heat- resistance of the finished containers and packages.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method of manufacturing a shaped tray or plate of fibrous material. The method comprises the steps of(i) providing a fibrous pulp, in which the fibres substantially consist of at least 85 wt-% of softwood fibres having an average fibre length of at least 2.0 mm and at most 15 wt-% of broke having a fibre length of about 0.05 mm to 1.0 mm, (ii) turning the pulp into a foamed suspension, (iii) supplying the foamed suspension from a headbox to a forming fabric of a board machine to form a fibrous web, (iv) drying the web to obtain a dried web having a compressibility in the thickness direction of at least 20 %, and(v) including the web as a layer in a board, which is turned to said tray or plate by thermopressing or deep-drawing. The invention even covers shaped trays and plates produced by use of the method.

Abstract: The invention concerns a deep-drawn paper tray (4), particularly a shallow tray made of paperboard or cardboard, a method and an apparatus for manufacturing such a tray by deep-drawing techniques, and a closed product package comprising the tray of the invention, particularly a heat-sealed gas- and liquid-tight food package. The tray comprises a bottom (4a) and upwardly expanding side walls around the bottom, the side walls of the tray being shaped to expand through a plurality of circumferential steps (4b, 4c, 4d) dimensioned low enough for obtaining wrinkle-free side walls for the tray. The outermost step is a flat, wrinkle-free rim flange (4d), which enables liquid and gas proof heat-sealing of a lid to form the package. The apparatus according to the invention may comprise upper and lower moulding tools (10, 11) with concentric movable frames (10b, 10c, 10d) for forming the tray bottom and side wall steps to paper blanks, and moulding tools (10) may be mounted onto a rotating turret (9) carrying a paper blank through working stations arranged along the turret circumference, to shape the tray bottom and the side wall steps at the consecutive stations.

Abstract: The invention provides a method of controlling retention on a forming fabric in a paper making process, an intermediate product for use in the method, as well as use of material for the intermediate product. For making the intermediate product at least one paper making chemical is added to a slurry of fine cellulose fibres such as micro fibrillated cellulose (MFC), the specific surface area of those fibres being larger than that of the fibres of the main fibrous suspension for paper making, causing the paper making chemical being adsorbed on the fine cellulose fibres. This intermediate product is then incorporated in the main fibrous suspension before the suspension is supplied from the paper machine head box to the forming fabric. Other paper making chemicals may be added to the fibrous suspension before or after addition of the intermediate product, so that interactions between different chemicals are prevented. The invention permits an increased retention in general as well as improved control of retention of paper making chemicals separately and/or in relation to each other.
