Abstract: PURPOSE:To easily obtain the title compound as a flame retardant without the need for any catalyst by reaction under specified conditions between bis (4-hydroxy-3, 5-dibromophenyl) sulfone and 4-allyloxy-4'-hydroxy-3,3',5,5'- tetrabromodiphenylsulfone. CONSTITUTION:In the presence of an alkali, using allyl chloride as allylating agent, (A) 1mol of bis (4-hydroxy-3,5-dibromophenyl) sulfone is incorporated with (B) 0.02-0.40 (pref. 0.05-0.30)mol of 4 allyloxy-4,-hydroxy-3,3',5,5' tetrabromodiphenylsulfone under normal or higher pressure at room temperature to 150 deg.C, thus obtaining the objective compound. The amount of the allylating agent to be used is >=1.0 molar times (pref. 1.25-1.50 molar times) based on the total of the hydroxyl groups in both the compounds A and B as raw materials. It is preferable that the amount of the alkali to be used be 1.0-1.50 molar times.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flame-retardant composition having higher flame retardance and water resistance than conventional halogen-free flame retardants, and to provide a flame-retardant resin composition which uses the flame- retardant composition. SOLUTION: This flame-retardant auxiliary comprises a polyamine- polyisocyanate cross-linked product. The flame-retardant composition comprises the flame-retardant auxiliary and a flame retardant. The flame-retardant resin composition is produced by compounding the flame-retardant composition into a resin. The flame retardant is preferably selected from the group consisting of phosphorus-based flame retardants, metal oxides and expandable graphite. The flame-retardant resin composition can widely be used as a material for various electric apparatuses, automotive parts, building materials, electric wires, cables and so on.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain ethylenediamine zinc phosphate that is useful as a frame retardant or the like and simply producible in an industrial scale by dripping an aqueous solution containing ethylenediamine and an inorganic metal base to an aqueous solution prepared by dissolving a zinc compound in a phosphoric acid aqueous solution. SOLUTION: A zinc compound, for example, zinc sulfate or the like is dissolved in a phosphoric acid aqueous solution (the amount of the phosphoric acid is 1.0-2.0 moles based on the zinc compound). Then, ethylenediamine (preferably in an amount of 0.5-0.8 mol per mole of the zinc compound) and an inorganic metal base, for example, sodium hydroxide (preferably in an amount of 2.0-3.0 gram equivalents per mole of the zinc compound) are dissolved in water and the solution is dropped in the zinc and phosphoric acid aqueous solution to effect their reactions and the objective ethylenediamine zinc phosphate represented by the formula: Zn2P2O8C2N2H10 is obtained thereby.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new flame-retardant carbonate compound being an excellent flame-retardant and capable of effecting high flame-retardant performance without deteriorating the mechanical properties of the following resin(s), especially when thermosetting resin(s) or thermoplastic resin(s) is (are) compounded with it. SOLUTION: This flame-retardant carbonate compound is expressed by formula I [(a1) and (a2) are each an integer of 1-3; (b1) and (b2) are each an interger of 1-2), e.g. a compound where (a1)+(a2)+(b1)+(b2)=4-10 in formula I. The compound of formula I is obtained by reaction between brominated p- cumylphenol of formula II and phosgen, trichloromethyl chloroformate or trichloromethyl carbonate. The compound of formula I is obtained by reaction between the compound of formula II and a carbonic diester. To obtain the other objective flame-retardant resin composition, compounding 100 pts.wt. of a resin with 5-50 pts.wt. of the subject flame-retardant carbonate compound is preferable.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as a frame-retardant for synthetic resins, capable of improving coloring by reacting diphenylethane with a specific brominating reagent in the presence of a prescribed catalyst. SOLUTION: Diphenylethane is reacted with broinine chloride in the presence of a Lewis acid, e.g. an antimony halide (e.g. antimony trichloride) to give the objective compound having an average number of brominations of 5-7. A reaction in which diphenylethane and the Lewis acid are dissolved in a reaction solvent (e.g. methylene chloride) and bromine chloride is dripped to carry out reaction may be cited as the reaction method. The amount of bromine chloride added is in a molecular ratio of an equimolar amount to 1.5 times as much as mols to the average number of brominations based on 1mol of the objective compound. The objective number of brominations is in a range of 5-7 per molecule by taking frame-retardant performance and mechanical performance of the objective compound obtained after the reaction into consideration. The objective compound is white powder extremely improved in coloring and can be directly used as it for a frame-retardant for a polyolefin resin.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound excellent in light resistance and processability (flowability) when blended in a resin and useful as a flame- retardant for compounding flame-retardant resins frequently used in various electric instruments, etc. SOLUTION: This brominated p-cumylphenol expressed by formula I [(a) is 1-3 integer; (b) is 1-2 integer] is obtained by brominating p-cumylphenol with a brominating agent (e.g. bromine chloride) in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. aluminum chloride). The compound of formula I preferably has 2.5-4.0 average brominated number, contains 45-62wt.% bromine, is a viscous material at room temperature having pale yellow color, liquid at >=50 deg.C and contains 0.001-30wt.% of dibromo derivative, 30-95wt.% of tribromo derivative, 1-65wt.% of tetrabromo derivative and 0.01-10wt.% of pentabromo derivative. It is preferable to blend 5-50 pts.wt. of the compound of formula I with 100 pts.wt. of a resin.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an economical, advantageous and industrial method more simplified than conventional procedure wherein bis[3,5-dibromo-4-(2,3- dibromopropoxy)phenyl]propane is separated and recovered as fine powder from a solution prepared by a production process. CONSTITUTION:A poor solvent having a higher boiling point than that of a good solvent is dripped to a solution of bis[3,5-dibromo-4-(2,3-dibromopropoxy) phenyl]propane dissolved in the good solvent obtained in the production process. After the completion of dripping, bis[3,5-dibromo-4-(2,3-dibromopropoxy) phenyl]propane is recovered as fine powder dispersed into the solvent while distilling away the good solvent. High-quality bis[3,5-dibromo-4-(2,3- dibromopropoxy)phenyl]propane can be separated and recovered as fine power by more simplified process than a conventional process.
