Abstract: The invention is concerned with a method of preparing polybromoacenaphtene and its condensate which are useful intermediates in the preparation of polybromoacenaphthylene and its condensate possessing excellent flame retardant properties. The method of the invention comprises reacting an acenaphthene derivative or its condensate with bromine in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst, by feeding a solution of the acenaphthene derivative or its condensate and bromine simultaneously at a predetermined rate into a reactor containing a halogenated hydrocarbon and an iron catalyst.

Abstract: An optically active substituted (2S,3R)-epoxyenone derivative (I), is new. Optically active substituted (2S,3R)-epoxyenone derivative of formula (I) is new. [Image] R 1>methyl, ethyl or 3-10C alkyl; and R 2>optionally substituted phenyl or tert-butyl. Independent claims are also included for: (a) method (M) for preparation of (I) involving: asymmetrically oxidizing an enone of formula R 1>-CH=CH-C(=O)-R 2>(II); (b) an optically active (2R,3S)-epoxyester of formula (III); (c) method (M1) for preparation of (III) involving: oxidizing (I) with an oxidizing agent; (d) method (M2) for preparation of an optically active (2S,3R)-2,3-epoxypropionic acid of formula (IV) having a substituent at 3-position involving hydrolyzing (III); (e) 3-halogenopropan-1-one derivative of formula R 1>-CH(X)-CH 2-C(=O)-R 2>(V); (f) method (M3) for preparation of (V) involving reacting a beta -hydroxyketone derivative of formula R 1>-CH(OH)CH 2-C(=O)-R 2>(VI) with a hydrogen halide or hydrogen halide acid; (g) method (M4) for preparation of (II) involving treating (V) with a base; (h) method (M5) for preparation of an optically active 2,3-epoxy-3-cyclohexylpropionic acid or its ester involving: reacting an enzyme having an ability to asymmetrically hydrolyze an ester bond, to a mixture of (2R,3S)-2,3-epoxy-3-cyclohexylpropionate and a (2R,3S)-2,3-epoxy-3-cyclohexylpropionate, of the 2,3-epoxy-3-cyclohexylpropionate of formula (VII) for stereoselective hydrolysis, followed by separation and purification. Abstract: Brominated acenaphthylene condensates having a general formula: wherein x represents an integer from 1 to 2, y is an integer from 1 to 6 and n is 1 or more, are produced by brominating the side chain of acenaphthene with 0.2 to 2.0 times as much moles of bromine as acenaphthene under ultraviolet irradiation or in the presence of a radical initiator in a halogenated hydrocarbon solvent, adding a Lewis acid catalyst to the reaction solution, in which the bromination has been effected to condense the brominated acenaphthene, then adding to the reaction solution an equimolar or more amount of bromine to the acenaphthene to further brominate and condense the brominated acenaphthene or brominated acenaphthene condensates, and thereafter dehydrobrominating the brominated acenaphthene condensates. The brominated acenaphthylene condensates produced in accordance with the invention have excellent radiation-resisting and fire-retarding properties.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flame-retardant resin composition having enhanced flame retardancy and mechanical performance in conventional diphenylmethane bromides. SOLUTION: This composition is a mixture of hexabromodiphenylethane with decabromodiphenylethane having 7.6-9.2 average bromination number. In the gas-chromatographic analysis, the nonabromo isomers occupy 16-50 area % and the decabromo compound ranges from 6-40 area % and has a brightness by Hunter of >=80. This brominated diphenylethane mixture is formulated to a resin.
