Abstract: Disclosed is a process for forming secure images which comprises electrostatically charging an imaging member (1); imagewise exposing the charged member, thereby forming a latent image on the member; developing the latent image with a liquid developer comprising a liquid medium, a charge control additive, and toner particles comprising a colorant and a polymeric material; allowing the developed image to dry on the imaging member; contacting the portion of the imaging member with the dry developed image with a substantially transparent sheet (18) having an adhesive material on the surface thereof in contact with the imaging member, thereby transferring the developed image from the imaging member to the substantially transparent sheet; contacting the adhesive surface of the substantially transparent sheet with the developed image with a paper sheet (25) having a polymeric coating on the surface that is in contact with the substantially transparent sheet; and applying heat and pressure to the substantially transparent sheet and the paper sheet at a temperature and pressure sufficient to affix the image permanently to the paper. The resulting document is a paper sheet covered with the transparent sheet, with the developer material that forms the image being situated between the paper sheet and the transparent sheet. The disclosed process is generally useful for applications such as passport photographs, identification badges, banknote paper, and the like.

[Image] R 1 - R 4 and R 8 - R 1 0H, alkyl, aryl, arylalkyl, or alkylaryl; R 1+R 2 and R 3+R 4a ring; a and b : 0 - 3; c : 0 - 4; R 5 - R 7aryl, (aryl)alkyl, alkylaryl, halo, ester, amide, sulfone, amine, ammonium, nitrile, nitro, hydroxy, cyano, pyridine, pyridinium, ether, aldehyde, ketone, carbonyl, thiocarbonyl, sulfate, sulfide, sulfoxide, phosphine, phosphonium, phosphate, mercapto, nitroso, acyl, acid anhydride, azide, azo, (iso)cyanato, (iso)thiocyanato, urethane, or urea; Y : O, S, N(R 8), or C(R 9)(R 1 0); Q : COOH or SO 3H; Q ->COO ->, or SO 3 ->; d : 1 - 5; A : an anion; CA : H or a cation associated with all but one of the Q ->. The number of carbon atoms in R 1+R 2+R 3+R 4+R 5+R 6+R 7+R 8+R 9+R 1 0 is at least 16. Provided that: when the colorant compound is a compound of formula (III) - (IV) (where T 1 is COOR 1 2, SO 3R 1 3, C(O)NR 1 4R 1 5, or SO 2R 1 6R 1 7; T 2 is T 1 and SO 3; and R 1 2 - R 1 7 are alkyl, aryl, arylalkyl, or alkylaryl), then 1) either c is 0 - 3 or d is 1 - 4; and 2) either three of R 1 - R 4 are H, only one of R 1 - R 4 is H, R 1 and R 2 both are H, R 3 and R 4 are both H, or R 1 and R 3 are both H and R 2 and R 4 are alkyl or arylalkyl. An independent claim is included for process involving: (a) incorporating into an ink jet printing apparatus a phase change ink composition; (b) melting the ink; and (c) causing droplets of the melted ink to be ejected in an imagewise pattern onto a substrate.
