Abstract: A valve train for internal combustion engines utilizing an inverted bucket tappet with a pivot structure operatively disposed between the tappet and the end of the valve stem allowing the valves to be angulated with respect to each other and to the axis of the cylinder in both the transversal and the horizontal planes of the engine. Accordingly on a multi-valve engine, the valves extend radially from the associated combustion chamber to open and increase space in the center of the cylinder head for spark plugs, injectors, or pre-combustion chambers and so that the combustion chamber can be designed with a hemispherical surface, with tangentially disposed valve heads. The construction allows the use of large valves in conjunction with stronger, better-cooled valve seats and bridges. The tappets can be actuated conventionally by direct-acting overhead camshafts, by rocker arms and "T" bridges.

Abstract: A cylinder head and induction passage arrangement for a three intake valve internal combustion engine wherein the center intake passage and its porting arrangement is directed so as to augment the tumble action caused by the side valve seats and their intake passages. The construction also provides that the center intake valve will be disposed so that there will be no shrouded area in the path of flame from the spark plug so as to ensure complete combustion. The cylinder head is made in such a way that the same cylinder head may be used for either bank of an engine having angularly inclined cylinder banks through the machining of only one face thereof.

Abstract: An ignition system for a multi-valve internal combustion engine wherein the valves all reciprocate about acute angles to a plane containing the cylinder bore axis and wherein a spark plug is positioned in a generally parallel extending direction to the plane and is offset slightly toward the side of the plane containing the most valves. A spark coil is affixed to the terminal end of the spark plug and is itself offset to the other side of the plane to nest between the two poppet valves and provide a compact, low volume combustion chamber and a compact, low height engine arrangement.

Abstract: Several embodiments of internal combustion engines having at least five valves, three intake and two exhaust, all operated by a single camshaft. The intake valves are disposed so as to provide a smooth combustion chamber configuration by minimizing the difference in angle between the valves and the valves and rocker arms are arranged so that different degree of lift may be provided. All of the intake valves have the same stem length. One rocker arm operates one valve and another rocker arm operates two valves with the two valves being operated being differently configured so as to provide the desired different lift. In addition, a staged intake system is included that has a single intake passage that extends perpendicular to a plane containing the cylinder bore axis and serving one intake valve and a siamese intake passage serving the other intake valves. The siamese intake passage has a section that extends also perpendicularly to the plane.

Abstract: Several embodiments of cylinder head and valve train configurations for an overhead valve internal combustion engine that permits increased valve area without interference and while maintaining simplified valve actuation. In each embodiment one pair of valves is operated by one cam shaft and lies on one side of a plane containing the axis of the cylinder. Three other valves are positioned primarily on the other side of the plane and reciprocate about axes that are not parallel with each other. These axes, however, intersect so that each of these three valves may be operated by the same cam shaft. In one embodiment of the invention the intersection of the valves axis is coincident with the axis of rotation of the respective cam shaft so as to permit direct actuation of the valves. In another embodiment the intersection lies substantially along a plane that intersects the stems of the valves when they are closed to facilitate operation of multiple valves from a single cam lobe by means of a single rocker arm.

Abstract: A multivalve internal combustion engine uses multiple inlet ports (2,3), each having a separate throttle (6), a fuel injection (7) and an intake valve (5). The individual inlet ports are positioned in such a way that they join the cylinderhead essentially in the same circumferential direction, thereby achieving a continuous unidirectional whirl in the cylinder at all engine speeds and loads. At low engine speeds, only one inlet port is opened; further inlet ports are opened progressively. The diameter of the inlet ports differ in size, whereby the first opened inlet port generates the fastest gas speed and the subsequent inlet ports generate successively slower gas speeds. Achieving an uninterrupted continuous strong whirl turbulence in the cylinder throughout the engine speed range, results in overall higher maximum power output, a clean fast burn and optimum torque characteristics using variable gas column adjustments.

Abstract: Engines having cylinders of noncircular cross section wherein the cylindrical curve is generated at a preselected constant outwardly normal distance from a closed curve. The closed curve is defined as including two spaced points on a major axis of symmetry of the cylinder with two continuously curved portions extending between these points and curved outwardly from the major axis. The closed curve about which the cylinder curve is generated is preferred such that there is a continuous change of curvature without discontinuity in that curvature in the cylindrical curve. The avoidance of discontinuity in the generating curve aids in mass production consideration and cutter life. A plurality of intake and exhaust port arrangements are disclosed illustrating four intake ports and four exhaust ports on opposite sides of the major axis of symmetry of the defined cylinder. In one embodiment, the outermost of the ports are smaller and are positioned closer to the major axis of symmetry. In another, the valves are oriented such that the stems thereof point to the centerline of the associated camshaft for direct actuation.
