Abstract:
The present invention relates to novel lubricant and friction modifier compositions optionally comprising a solid lubricant and a binding agent in water medium suitable for lubricating steel-steel interfaces such as tractor-trailer couplings, rail-wheel systems and other heavy duty applications. The invention also relates to compositions described above which include friction modifiers with high or very high and positive coefficients of friction such that the coefficient of friction is considerably higher than the solid lubricant. The invention further relates to compositions comprising a binding agent and a friction modifier with a very high and positive coefficient of friction in a water medium.
Abstract:
Waterborne lubricants comprising: (A) water-soluble inorganic salt; (B) homogeneously dispersed solid lubricant; (C) at least one homogeneously emulsified substance selected from mineral oils, animal and plant oils and fats, and synthetic oils; (D) surfactant; and (E) water, in which the weight ratio (B)/(A) is from 0.05:1 to 2:1 and the weight ratio {C/(A + B)} is from 0.05:1 to 1:1, provide a one-step, highly lubricating waterborne lubricant for use in the cold plastic working of metals. This waterborne lubricant can replace the conversion coating treatment (phosphate, oxalate, etc.) + reactive soap treatment combined lubrication system now in general use and is free of the environmental issues associated with the combined lubrication system, provides for facile coating removal, and is not subject to the decline in seizure resistance caused by nonuniform add-on when large numbers of workpieces are treated together by immersion.
Abstract:
A compressible graphite lubricant having a memory suspended in an anaerobic adhesive pipe sealant mixture of a polymerizable liquid acrylate ester monomer and a peroxy polymerization initiator. The graphite particles are formed of expanded graphite which gives the pipe sealant both compressibility and lubricating characteristics. The compound has the ability to change from a liquid with sufficient lubricity to assemble standard API and premium threaded connections without galling and then transform and fix itself into a continuous solid blocking or sealing agent in the gaps of the thread form. The expanded (compressible) graphite has a memory and, as part of the anaerobic fixing compound, allows the pipe sealant to maintain its sealing integrity under cycling of tension, compression, bending, and thermal expansion and contraction. The ability of the compressible lubricant/pipe sealant compound (c) to maintain sealing integrity under cycling of tension, compression, bending, and thermal expansion and contraction loads makes it particularly suitable for use in vertical and horizontal oil and gas wells using oil country tubular goods tubing, casing, and drill pipe. An additional aspect of the invention involves a threaded pipe joint having a compressible lubricant/pipe sealant (c) as described above deposited on at least a part of the threaded portion thereof.
Abstract:
A stearate free solid lubricant for cold working of metals contains approximately equal amounts of an alkene-acrylate ionomer and an alkoxylated alcohol in which the alcohol moiety has from 18-60 carbon atoms and the alkoxylate block has about the same number of carbon atoms. This lubricant can be conveniently applied from aqueous solution/suspension and works effectively even when the underlying steel surface has no conversion coating, which is usually required with stearate lubricants for best results.
Abstract:
The invention provides a water-in-oil microemulsion having high fire resistance, consisting of mineral oil; at least 50 wt.% water; and at least one polyethoxylated nonionic alcohol surfactant, the alcohol having 12-18 carbon atoms and having attached thereto between 2 and 25 ethoxy groups.
Abstract:
A lubricating grease having superior penetration, dropping point, and shear stability properties is provided comprising a base oil, an additive package, a urea-containing thickener, and a lithium soap thickener.
Abstract:
An oil-soluble reaction product of phosphorus-, low molecular weight basic nitrogen-, and optional boron-containing compounds is provided. This reaction product can solubilize significantly more phosphorus and boron per weight of compound than other known compounds and is used as an antiwear, antioxidant, and extreme pressure additive in lubrication oils.
Abstract:
The invention concerns electroviscous liquids containing aluminium silicates with a water content of 1 to 25 % by wt. and esters, as well as a method of producing such electroviscous liquids. The invention also concerns the use of esters of polyols containing 2 to 6 hydroxy groups and 2 to 32 C-atoms, and monocarboxylic acids containing 2 to 32 C-atoms as an electrically non-conducting, hydrophobic liquid in electroviscous liquids. Such electroviscous liquids exhibit high electroreactivity, do not produce sediment, are compatible with work materials and, above all, are readily biodegradable.
