    Abstract: A thermoplastic molding composition comprising a specified mixture containing (a) a methyl methacrylate (co)polymer, (b) a vinyl aromatic-vinyl cyanide copolymer, (c) a graft copolymer and optionally (d) conventional additives is such that (1) the copolymeric core used for graft copolymer (c) has a monomodal particle size distribution and an average particle size (D 50) as measured by a described method of 300-400 nm; and (2) the difference of the refractive index of the total composition used to produce (c) and that of the (a)/(b) matrix is 0.003-0.008 as measured by a specified method. A thermoplastic molding composition comprising a specified mixture containing (c) a graft copolymer is such that (1) the copolymeric core used for graft copolymer (c) has a monomodal particle size distribution and an average particle size (D 50) as measured by a described method of 300-400 nm; and (2) the difference of the refractive index of the total composition used to produce (c) and that of the matrix based on the other polymers is 0.003-0.008 as measured by a specified method. The specified mixture comprises by weight (A) a methyl methacrylate polymer (30-69%) obtained by polymerization of (i) methyl methacrylate (90-100%) and (ii) a 1-8C alkyl acrylate (0-10%); (B) a copolymer (30-69%) obtained by copolymerization of (iii) a vinyl aromatic monomer (75-88%) and (iv) a vinyl cyanide (12-25%); (C) a graft copolymer (1-40%) comprising a core polymer (60-90%) obtained from (v) a 1,3-diene (65-89.9%), (vi) a vinyl aromatic monomer (10-34.9%) and (vii) an agglomeration polymer together with a first shell (5-20%) obtained by polymerization of (viii) a vinyl aromatic monomer (30-39%), (ix) a 1-8C alkyl methacrylate (61-70%) and (x) a crosslinking monomer (0-3%) and a second shell (5-20%) obtained by polymerization of (xi) a 1-8C alkyl methacrylate (70-98%) and (xii) a 1-8C alkyl acrylate (2-30%), the weight ratio first : second shell being 2 : 1-1 : 2; and optionally (D) conventional additives (up to 20%). An independent claim is also included for production of the mixtures by melt mixing of the components.

    Abstract: Transparent, impact-resistant thermoplastic moulding materials containing (A) a methyl methacrylate (co)polymer, (B) a vinylaromatic-acrylonitrile copolymer and (C) a graft copolymer with a bimodal particle size distribution, in which the difference between the refractive index of (C) and that of the mixture of other components is less than 0.01. Transparent, impact-resistant thermoplastic moulding materials (I) containing a mixture of (A) 4-80 wt% methyl methacrylate (MMA) polymer derived from 90-100 wt% MMA and 0-10 wt% 1-8C alkyl acrylate, (B) 5-75 wt% of a copolymer of 78-88 wt% vinylaromatic monomer (VAr) and 12-22 wt% acrylonitrile (AN), (C) 10-91 wt% of a graft copolymer with a bimodal particle size distribution, comprising an elastomeric core with a glass transition point (Tg) below 0 deg C and one or more grafted shells based on 1-8C alkyl (meth)acrylate esters and optionally VAr (up to 22C) and/or crosslinking monomers and (D) 0-20 wt% additives, in which the amounts of (A), (B) and (C) add up to 100 wt% and the difference between the refractive index (RI) of component (C) and that of the mixture of (A), (B) and optionally (D) is less than 0.01 units. Independent claims are also included for (a) a method for the production of (I) by melt-compounding the components; (b) film, fibres and moulded products consisting essentially of (I).
