    Abstract: Multimetal oxide compsn. of formula (I) is new: (A)p (B)q (I): A = Mo12VaX bX cX dX eX fX gOx (co-phase); B = X 12CuhHiOy (key phase); X = W, Nb, Ta, Cr and/or Ce; X = Cu, Ni, Co, Fe, Mn and/or Zn; X = Sb and/or Bi; X = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs and/or H; X = Mg, Ca, Sr and/or Ba; X = Si, Al, Ti and/or Zr; X = Mo, W, V, Nb and/or Ta; a = 1-8; b = 0.2-5; c = 0-23; d, g = 0-50; e = 0-2; f = 0-5; h = 4-30; i = 0-20; x, y = values depending on the valency and content of elements other than O; p, q = values other than O, with the ratio p/q = 160:1 to 1:1. The A and B fractions are each in the form of 30 zones, which differ in chemical compsn. from their local surroundings, and the relative distribution of the A and B zones is as in a mixt. of finely-divided A and finely-divided B. Also claimed are multimetal oxide compsns. of wolframite structural type, of formulae (II), (III), (IV) and (V): in (II), 1/(A+B+C+D+E) = 0.7-1.3; F = 0-1; and B+C+D+E = over 0 to 1. In (III), 1/(A+B+C) = 0.7-1.3; A, B, C all = more than O and B+C = at most 1; In (IV), 1/(A+B) = 0.7-1.3; A, B both = more than O and B = at most 1; In (V), 1/(A+C) = 0.7-1.3; A, C both more than O and C at most 1.

    Abstract: A process for the catalytic gas-phase oxidation of acrolein to acrylic acid in a multiple contact tube fixed-bed reactor through whose space surrounding the contact tubes only one heat-exchange medium circuit is passed, at elevated temperature on catalytically active multimetal oxides with an acrolein conversion for a single pass of >/=95 mol % and an acrylic acid formation selectivity of >/=90 mol %, which comprises firstly passing the heat-exchange medium through the multiple contact tube fixed-bed reactor longitudinally, considered over the reaction container as a whole, to the contact tubes in cocurrent to the reaction-gas mixture and secondly superposing a transverse flow within the reaction container by means of an arrangement of successive baffles along the contact tubes which leaves passage cross sections free, so as to give a meandrous flow of the heat-exchange medium, seen in longitudinal section through the contact tube bundle, and setting the flow rate of the circulated heat-exchange medium so that its temperature rises by from 2 DEG to 10 DEG C. between the point of entry into the reactor and the point of exit out of the reactor.

    Abstract: A process for the catalytic gas-phase oxidation of propene to acrolein in a multiple contact tube fixed-bed reactor, with only one heat transfer medium being circulated through the space surrounding the contact tubes, at elevated temperature over catalytically active multimetal oxides at a propene conversion on a single pass of >/= 90 mol% and a selectivity of acrolein formation of >/= 85 mol%, in which the heat exchange medium on the one hand is passed longitudinally, viewed over the reaction vessel, to the contact tubes in cocurrent to the reaction gas mixture through the multiple contact tube fixed-bed reactor and, on the other hand, has, within the reaction vessel, due to a successive arrangement, along the contact tubes, of deflecting discs which leave open cross-sections free, a superposed crossflow in such a way that, in longitudinal section through the contact tube bundle, a meander-like flow of the heat exchange medium results and the flow velocity of the circulated heat exchange medium is here set in such a way that the temperature of the heat exchange medium rises by from 2 to 10 DEG C from the inlet point to the reactor to the outlet point from the reactor.
