Abstract: The present invention provides a multiple layer thermoplastic structure of a (1) skin layer selected from the group consisting of polypropylene, ethylene homopolymers having a density of from about 0.930 g/cc to about 0.960 g/cc, and ethylene homopolymers having a density of from about 0.930 g/cc to about 0.960 g/cc blended with an ethylene and a-olefin copolymers having a density less than about 0.930 g/cc, the skin layer having a thickness of greater than about 3.0 mils; (2) a radio frequency susceptible layer adhered to the skin layer, the radio frequency susceptible layer having a dielectric loss greater than 0.05 at 1-60 MHz and at temperatures of ambient to 250° C., the radio frequency susceptible layer having: (a) a first polyolefin selected from the group consisting of polypropylene and polypropylene copolymers, (b) a second polyolefin selected from the group consisting of ethylene copolymers, ultra-low density polyethylene, polybutene, and butene ethylene copolymers; (c) a radio frequency susceptible polymer selected from the group consisting of (i) ethylene copolymers having 50-85% ethylene content with comonomers selected from a first group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, ester derivatives of acrylic acid with alcohols having 1-10 carbons, ester derivatives of methacrylic acid with alcohols having 1-10 carbons, vinyl acetate, and vinyl alcohol (ii) homopolymers and copolymers containing at least one segment of urethanes, esters, ureas, imides, sulfones, and amides, and (d) a compatibilizing agent of a styrene and hydrocarbon copolymer; wherein the structure when fabricated into a 50 ml container has a water vapor transmission rate of less than 8% by weight after the container has been autoclaved at 121° C. for 20 minutes and stored for 90 days in an environmentally regulated compartment having 15% relative humidity at 40° C.

Abstract: A polymer based composition for fabricating into articles is described. The composition comprises: a polypropylene in an amount by weight from 40-90% of the composition and having a melting temperature greater than 130 DEG C; a radio frequency susceptible polymer in an amount by weight from 5-50% of the composition and having a dielectric loss greater than 0.05 at 1-60 MHz and ambient temperature to 250 DEG C, the susceptible polymer being selected from (1) polymers containing at least one segment selected from the group consisting of urethanes, esters, ureas, imides, sulfones, and amides, and (2) ethylene copolymers having 50-85% ethylene content copolymerized with at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, ester derivatives of acrylic acid with alcohols having 1-10 carbons, vinyl acetate, and vinyl alcohol; a compatibilizing polymer in an amount by weight from 5-30% of the composition, the compatibilizing polymer conferring compatibility between the radio frequency susceptible polymer, and the polypropylene, the compatibilizing polymer being a styrenic block copolymer with hydrocarbon soft segments, and wherein the composition has an optical haze value of less than 30% for the composition processed into a film of about 0.299 mm in thickness measured in accordance to ASTM D-1003, a mechanical modulus of less than 2758x10 Pa when measured according to ASTM D-882 and the composition exhibits no strain whitening after being strained at moderate speeds of about 50 cm per minute to about 100% elongation.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method for connecting rounded members (14) between planar members (16) comprising the steps of providing a rounded member (14) having an outer layer (20) having a first melting temperature range and an inner layer (22) concentrically disposed within the outer layer and having a second melting temperature range, the second melting temperature range being warmer than the first melting temperature range, providing a pair of opposed planar members (16), the planar members (16) each having a melting temperature within the first melting temperature range, positioning an end portion (14a) of the rounded member (14) between perimeter edges (18) of the pair of planar members (16) to define an interface area (26), applying pressure to the interface area (26) to collapse the end portion (14a) of the rounded member (14) to essentially a flattened position, applying sealing energy to the interface area (26) to heat the rounded member (14) to a temperature within the first melting temperature range but below the second melting temperature range, thereby forming a weld between the planar members (16), and the rounded member (14) in the interface area (26), and, releasing the pressure to the interface area (26) wherein the end portion (14a) of the rounded member (14) returns to an open position.
