Abstract: Compounds of the formula (I) wherein X is O or S, R1 and R2 each are hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, phenyl, alkyl, alkoxy, dialkylamino, trialkylammonium, acylamino or optionally functionally modified carboxy or sulfo groups, two adjacent radicals R1 and R2 optionally forming together a phenylene, a lower alkylene or a 1,3-dioxapropylene group; and A is a group of the formulae in which R3 is an alpha-, beta- or gamma-pyridyl, pyridyl-methylene, thiophenyl, furanyl, benzofuranyl, pyrazinyl, pyrimidinyl or pyridazinyl group. These compounds, which are suitable as optical brighteners, are prepared by reaction of a compound of the formula with a compound of the formula R3-Z wherein Y is a group and Z is -COCl or vice versa.

Abstract: Compounds of the general formula I in which X represents a trifluoromethyl group or a fluorine atom, n is 1 or 2, Z is an oxygen atom or a NR grouping, in which R is hydrogen or an optionally substituted alkyl group, the benzo rings optionally containing further nonchromophoric substituents. These compounds may be prepared by reacting the dichloride of 1,4-naphthalene-dicarboxylic acid with 2 mols of an o-aminophenol or of an o-nitroaniline and by subsequently cyclizing the acylamino compound obtained. The products are suitable as optical brighteners.

Abstract: Brighteners for detergents consisting of a mixture of 4,4'-bis-(2-morpholino-4-anilino-1,3,5-triazinylamino)-stilbene-2,2'-d isulfonic acid-di-Na salt and from 5 to 50% by weight, calculated on said brightener, of another brightener of the formula +TR in the above formula, M is an alkali metal cation, preferably sodium, X is a group of the formula -COR2 or -SO2R3, R2 being C1-C8-alkyl and R3 being C1-C5-alkyl, C4-C8-cycloalkyl, phenyl or toluyl, Y is hydrogen or C1-C5-alkyl, A is C3-C6-alkylene, R1 is hydrogen, C1-C5-alkyl, C4-C8-cycloalkyl, or a group of the formula and Z is an anilino group, a chloroanilino group or a morpholino group. Said brightener mixtures are color-stable and do not show any green discoloration even after a prolonged storage in a moist atmosphere.

The brightener may be a compound of the formula where R 1 and R 2 are the same or different and may be a carboxy or alkoxycarbonyl group or, preferably, hydrogen. The transparent layer may comprise another plastics film or sheet. In an example, TiO 2 pigmented plasticized p.v.c. was used as substrate, with an unpigmented film containing the optical brightener 1,4 - bis - (benzoxazol - 2 - yl) - naphthalene being laminated on to the substrate sheet.
