    Abstract: In an apparatus (200) for determining the rate of received data in a variable rate communication system, a decoder (230) decodes each frame of encoded data in a received signal at each possible data rate. The decoded data is processed by a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) element (240) to produce CRC bits. The data is reencoded and correlated by a correlator (234) with the received encoded data to produce a set of normalized correlation metrics. The decoded data may also be input to a Yamamoto detector (248) to Yamamoto quality metrics. Each operation is performed for each possible data rate. The normalized correlation metric for each rate is calculated from a correlation value and a constant computer for the rate. The correlation value is determined from a correlation of the demodulated soft frame symbols and the re-encoded frame. The highest normalized correlation metric is selected and the CRC bit for this data rate is checked. If the CRC checks, this data rate is indicated as the received data rate. Otherwise, the next highest normalized correlation metric is selected and the process continues. If no CRC checks, an erasure is indicated.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for decoding a frame of multi-rate encoded digital data which contains redundant information provided to validate the decoding operation. A frame of data is received which contains information bits and cyclic redundancy check (CRC) bits. In accordance with the invention, the received frame is decoded and a check is conducted to determine whether the CRC bits correspond correctly for the decoded information bits. If the decoded frame passes the CRC test process, the decoded frame is provided to the user. However, if the decoded frame does not pass the CRC test, then at least one additional decoding process is performed on the received frame. In the first exemplary embodiment of the present invention, on a failure of the CRC check, the data is decoded using a trellis decoder (224) and the data that yields the next most likely path through the trellis is selected. In a second illustrative embodiment, if the CRC test fails, the trellis decoder (224) then identifies all paths having metrics within a predetermined threshold of a metric associated with the optimal path through the trellis. The CRC test is then performed on the decoded frame with respect to the suboptimal paths (starting with the most likely path). If any of these paths pass the CRC check, the information bits are output by the decoder (224). If not, an error is declared.

    Abstract: A parameter estimator for estimating one or more parameter(s) from a signal is described. A correlation function is derived from the signal, and the correlation function analyzed to determine if one or more first peak(s) are present, and, if so, distinguishable from the sidelobe(s) of a second peak. If the one or more first peak(s) are present and distinguishable from the sidelobe(s) of the second peak, the one or more parameter(s) are estimated from the one or more first peak(s). If the one or more first peak(s) are not present, or, if present, are not distinguishable from the sidelobe(s) of the second peak, the one or more parameter(s) are estimated from the second peak. The parameter estimator may be employed in a subscriber station to estimate a parameter such as the time of arrival of one or more base station or sector pilot signals in a wireless communication system. This information may be utilized in an overall advanced forward link trilateration (AFLT) process for estimating the location of the subscriber station.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for calculating a representative measurement from multiple data measurements of signals from cellular base stations, thereby facilitating utilization of a cellular network to determine position of a mobile station even in non-line of sight and/or dynamic fading environments. A method for calculating a representative measurement includes determining a window of time, selecting data measurements within the window, and calculating a representative time of arrival responsive thereto, such as averaging all data measurements within the window. A representative RMSE estimate may be calculated. To determine a window of time all data measurements within a predetermined window from an earliest time of arrival may be selected. Alternatively the window may be determined by sliding over the data measurements. The data measurements may be stored in a database in a mobile station, and the database is updated to include each new measurement.
