The speed detecting means which detects the movement speed of the magnetic head 4 and is freely varied the detection gain consists of a head position detecting sensor 6, amplifying circuits 16 to 18, 27, and 28, capacitors 25 and 26, inverting amplifying circuits 29 and 30, comparing circuits 21 and 22, a multiplexing circuit 20, and a gain control circuit 33. The error between a speed profile output and the output of the magnetic head movement speed detecting means whose detection gain is freely varied is detected to seek a prescribed number of tracks by the magnetic head 4, and the detection gain of the movement speed detecting means of the magnetic head 4 is so adjusted that the seek time at this time satisfies standards.
