In accordance with the invention, the number of operative cylinders (1, 2, 3) of Diesel engines (10) is reduced under low load by shutting off fuel injectors (1I, 2I, 3I) and deactivating the intake valves (1Vi, 2Vi, 3Vi) and exhaust valves (1Ve, 2Ve, 3Ve) to selected cylinders (1I, 2I, 3I). The inactive cylinders are heated up by glow plugs (1GP, 2GP, 3GP) to a minimum temperature prior to being reactivated. A computer (7) controls the number of operative cylinders (1, 2, 3) according to load, and to alternate between operative cylinders to provide for even wear so that maintenance cost is minimized.

The internal combustion engine includes a cast cylinder head having as-cast alignment ribs (26, 28) that align a squared-off fulcrum (56) in the rocker assembly. The rocker arm (42) also has two substantially flat surfaces that engage the planar sides of the fulcrum (56) to minimize lateral movement of the rocker arm (42). The fulcrum (56) is received between the cast alignment ribs (26, 28). The ribs are biased from a major axis to insure proper fulcrum alignment during assembly without the use of a jig.

A single-cylinder, four-stroke cycle, internal combustion engine arranged in an overhead valve configuration includes a first valve train and a second valve train. The first valve train includes a first cam on a camshaft, a first pushrod driven by the first cam, a first rocker arm attached to the first pushrod, and an exhaust valve driven by the first rocker arm. The second valve train includes a second cam on the camshaft, a second pushrod driven by the second cam, a second rocker arm attached to the second pushrod, and an intake valve driven by the second rocker arm. The first rocker arm is longer than the second rocker arm.

Die Erfindung betrifft einen Ventiltrieb, insbesondere für Viertaktmotoren mit folgenden Bauelementen: ein Kipphebelgestell (2) mit zwei Leisten (34, 35) zur Aufnahme von Kipphebeln; Hydroelemente (6); ein Stahlblechteil, das zwischen den Hydroelementen (6) und dem Kipphebelgestell (2) angeordnet ist; eine Druckölleitung; gleich ausgebildete tiefgezogene Stahlblechkipphebel (1) mit U-förmigem Querschnitt, zylindrischer Rolle, einer Kalotte (4) für eine Abstützkugel (5) des Hydroelements (6) und mit Kontaktelementen für die Ventilschäfte der Ein- und Auslassventile. Die Fertigungskosten der Stahlblechkipphebel werden erfindungsgemäss dadurch gesenkt, dass die Aussenkolben (9) der Hydroelemente (6) in Sackbohrungen (8) des Kipphebelgestells (2) geführt sind und dass am Boden der Sackbohrungen (8) eine Stahlscheibe (11) als Anschlag für den Innenkolben (10) angeordnet ist.

An internal combustion engine having an oil drainback passage and integral check valve. The oil drainback passage allows the flow of oil from the valve box to the crankcase of the engine during the normal operation prevents the backwards flow of oil from the crankcase to the valve box when high pressures exist in the crankcase or if the engine is operated at elevated angles. The oil drainback passage is formed by a bore through a cylinder wall of the crankcase and a bore through the cylinder head. The check valve includes a cavity within the cylinder wall of the crankcase, located at the end of the bore in the cylinder wall there it meets the bore in the cylinder head, and check a ball disposed within the cavity. During normal operation, the check ball floats within the cavity allows the flow of oil through the oil drainback passage back to the crankcase. If high crankcase pressure exist, or if the engine is operated at an elevated angle, the check ball will seat against the end of the bore in the cylinder head and prevent the backward flow of oil through the drainback passage to the valve box.

Die Erfindung betrifft einen kipp- bzw. drehbar gelagerter Kipphebel, für einen Ventiltrieb eines Verbrennungsmotors, ausgestattet mit einem mechanischen Ventilspieleinstellelement zum selbsttätigen Ein/Nachstellen eines ersten vorbestimmten Ventilspiels zwischen Kipphebel und Ventilschaftende, wobei das Ventilspieleinstellelement einen im Kipphebel drehbar gelagerten Hohlzylinder mit um den Hohlzylinderumfang ausgebildeten ebenen Flächen ("Gleitstein") und eine den Gleitstein in einer vorbestimmten Drehrichtung drehenden Drehfeder umfasst, und wobei die selbsttätige Drehung des Gleitsteins durch Anlage der jeweiligen hinteren Flächenkanten der ebenen Fläche an das Ventilschaftende gehindert ist, solange ein zweites vorbestimmtes Ventilspiel nicht erreicht ist.

Two support arms of a bearing support member (12) extend in opposite directions, each support arm (28, 30) having an overlying bearing cup (36) engageable with a rocker arm (10). A bearing sleeve (32) is mounted over each support arm (28, 30) between the respective bearing cup and the bearing support member (12) to provide an inner raceway. Each bearing sleeve has sufficient radial clearance with respect to the respective support arm (28, 30) such that the bearing sleeve (32) precesses with oscillation of the rocker arm (10). Rolling members within an annulus formed between the bearing support member (12) and each bearing cup allow the rocker arm (10) to freely oscillate rotatably with respect to the bearing support member (12). A bearing assembly for mounting within a rocker arm (10) is also disclosed.
