Abstract: A composition for preventing and treating diabetes mellitus comprising the extract of gang-hwa mugwort(Artemisia) is provided to normalize sugar metabolism and lipid metabolism disorders caused by diabetes mellitus and activity of anti-oxidizing enzyme which is abnormally increased. Abstract: A method for extracting mugwort is provided to improve the liver detoxication capacity of a mugwort extract by using a mixture extract consisting of water and ethanol in the ratio of 70:30 for low-temperature extraction of the mugwort. The method comprises the steps of: (a) after dipping mugwort from Ganghwa in a mixture solvent, ten times of the weight of the mugwort, prepared by mixing water with ethanol in the ratio of 70:30 using an extraction flask at a temperature of 20-25 deg.C for 2 hours, performing a primary low-temperature extraction thereon at a temperature of 40-45 deg.C for 12 hours using an extraction flask having a vertical reflux condenser; and (b) after dipping the first extract in the solvent at a temperature of 20-25 deg.C for 2 hours, performing a secondary low-temperature extraction thereon at a temperature of 50-55 deg.C for 12 hours using an extraction flask having a vertical reflux condenser.
