Abstract:
The invention measures the frequency of a heterodyne laser radar (LADAR) system signal in the input cell of a focal, plane array (FPA). Embodiments amplify the return signal, and drive it into a counter for a fixed period of time. The frequency is the number of counts divided by the count time. An example design amplifier amplifies the return of a single photon response of an avalanche photodiode with a gain of 100 into a digital signal level at a 200 MHz rate with only 84 µW, demonstrating the feasibility of the approach.
Abstract:
A mid-wave infrared system provides high spatial and temporal resolution measurements of atmospheric temperatures and moisture fields using a constellation of low earth orbit satellites. The disclosed system is smaller, lighter, less complex, and requires less energy than existing systems, due to implementation of an infrared avalanche photodiode array detector that provides enhanced sensitivity with reduced cooling requirements, and an Offner spectrometer having a novel a refractive element inserted near the grating that reduces the size and power requirements of the spectrometer. Embodiments of the disclosed method include deploying a constellation of devices for cooperative infrared sensing of atmospheric phenomena at similar rates, lower cost, and much higher resolution compared to geosynchronous approaches. Some embodiments further include combined analysis of measurements obtained by the disclosed devices with complementary measurements made by other low-earth and high-earth orbital and/or ground-based devices.
Abstract:
The present invention provides an apparatus and method for adjusting an inter-pupil distance between eyepieces associated with a pair of telescopic elements in a viewing system with each of the telescopic elements having a corresponding rectilinear focal plane array at the focal plane thereof. The apparatus includes a mechanical drive for moving the focal plane arrays associated with the telescopic elements, wherein the inter-pupil distance is adjusted without skewing an orientation of the focal plane arrays, wherein distortion associated with inter-pupil distance adjustment is eliminated.
Abstract:
An illumination system for uniform illumination of a target to facilitate imaging of the target by an imaging system. The apparatus which comprises a laser source for generating a plurality of independent or quasi-independent point sources of light; a fiber optic bundle which comprises a plurality of individual optical fibers for each receiving at least one of the plurality of point sources of light, from the laser source, and directing the plurality of point sources of light toward the target for illumination thereof; and an oscillating diffuser for receiving the plurality of point sources of light and oscillating at a frequency so as to redirect each one of the plurality of point sources of light over an area of the target to be illuminated to facilitate uniform illumination and imaging thereof.
Abstract:
Disclosed is an example for determining miss distance and bullet speed of a burst of bullets. In one example, shock wave (SW) vectors emanating from bullets are estimated using a first sensor. Further, firing point (FP) vectors and closest-point-of-approach (CPA) vectors emanating from the bullets are estimated using a second sensor. The first sensor and the second sensor are disposed on a platform. The SW vectors, the FP vectors and the CPA vectors are determined as emanating from the burst of bullets. The miss distance and bullet speed of the burst of bullets are determined using the FP vectors, the SW vectors, and the CPA vectors that are emanating from the burst of bullets.
Abstract:
A flash memory process and device for encrypting and storing data in a non-volatile flash memory associated with a host system. The device includes a flash memory, an encryption engine, a key store, a SRAM to interface with the host system, and associated control circuitry. When powered on, the device first determines if a valid encryption key is held in the key store. If a valid key is held in the store, a program flag is set when encrypted data in the flash memory is ready to be decrypted by the engine and stored in the SRAM for use by the host system, or when data originating from the host system and stored in the SRAM is ready to be encrypted by the engine and programmed into the flash memory. The device can be embedded in any host system wherein data must be encrypted while at rest in a memory.
Abstract:
A system and method for increasing the fiber coupling efficiency of diode lasers is disclosed. The diode laser has a diode pump source for generating a force to pump a laser and a double clad fiber directly coupled to the diode pump source instead of coupling to the multimode fiber. The pumped laser is transmitted directly through the double clad fiber thereby increasing the coupling efficiency of the diode pump source. At least one connector is utilized for connecting the double clad fiber and the diode pump source. The connector has at least one adhesive placed in contact with an acrylate coating and not in contact with a glass cladding of the double clad fiber to avoid cladding stripper and fiber splice thereby increasing the fiber coupling efficiency.
Abstract:
An athermal locking mechanism apparatus for large optic mounts is disclosed. The apparatus comprises at least one locking nut, at least one flexurized spring collet attached to a rigid base structure, a pivot shaft engaged with an optical yolk on a rotational axis of symmetry and a plurality of threads that joins the locking nuts with the flexurized spring collet The threads provide an increased level of a radial clamping force onto the pivot shaft, The interference generated between the locking nut and the spring collet causes all flexures to squeeze down onto the shaft, applying a purely symmetric radial force during the locking process. This eliminates any induced rotational torque and prevents the optical element from moving during the locking process after being properly aligned.
