    Abstract: A sensor array system is provided for determining both the number of axles on a vehicle travelling along the roadway and the distance between an axle and an immediately adjacent axle. The sensor array system includes a first group of axl e sensors comprising at least one pair of spaced-apart axle sensors which directly sense axles, the distance between adjacent spaced-apart axle sensors in the first grou p of axle sensors being distance "a". The sensor array further includes a second group of axle sensors comprising a second set of axle sensors which includes at least three ax le sensors which directly sense axles which are more closely spaced apart by a distance "d" which is less than the distance "a" between adjacent axle sensors of the first group o f axle sensors. The span between a first axle sensor of the second group of axle sensor s and a last axle sensor of the second group of axle sensors is distance "b". The span between a first axle sensor in the first group of axle sensors and a last axle sensor in the second group of axle sensors is distance "c". The distance "c" must be greater than, or equal to, the largest unknown axle spacing to be measured on the vehicle. The distance "b" must be greater than, or equal to, distance "a". Finally, the spacing "d" must b e such that any axle of the vehicle must trigger at least one axle sensor. The system o perates independently of the speed of the vehicle.

    Abstract: Traffic monitoring systems which are provided herein include a set of sensors which is disposed in a traffic lane approaching a hazard for providing signals w hich are indicative of the speed, and which are also indicative of at least the weight of a vehicle traversing those set of sensors. A processor has a memory for storing site-speci fic dimensional data related both to the hazard and to signals received from the set of sensors. A traffic signalling device is associated with the traffic lane and is disposed downstream of the set of sensors. The processor, which controls the traffic sign alling device, is responsive to the signals from the set of sensors for computing an ac tual vehicle speed and a computed maximum vehicle speed, which is derived from the si te-specific dimensional data, and also from at least the weight of the vehicle. That speed is the maximum speed for that particular vehicle safely to negotiate that partic ular hazard. The processor operates the traffic signalling device if the computed act ual vehicle speed exceeds the computed maximum vehicle speed. One embodiment is loca ted before a steep downgrade and computes a safe descent speed for a vehicle to desc end the downgrade and displays the safe speed on a roadside sign. Another embodiment is located before a curve, e.g., a highway exit ramp, and uses ramp data together w ith vehicle weight, height and class of vehicle information to predict whether the v ehicle will exceed a threshold speed for that vehicle to negotiate that curve without rollov er. A third embodiment is located on a steep downgrade approaching a traffic signal co ntrolled intersection and computes whether the vehicle is a "runaway" which cannot stop a t the intersection if necessary. In that case the system pre-empts the traffic signal to ensure that the vehicle has right of way through the intersection.
