    Abstract: Prepn. of carboxylic acid chlorides comprises reaction of sec. or tert. halides of non-aromatic hydrocarbons with carbon monoxide at elevated pressure in the presence of catalytic amts. of a Lewis acid. The reaction is carried out in the presence of alkylaluminium halides of formula Rn-Al-X3-n (III), where R is 1-8C alkyl, X is halogen and n is a statistical value from 0.5-2.5. Prepn. of carboxylic acid halides of formula (I') starts from halides of formula (II'), R1 is H, branched or pref. straight alkyl, omega-haloalkyl, pref. omega-chloro or omega-bromoalkyl or cycloalkyl. The carbon number of the alkyl residues is pref. 1-5 and the cycloalkyl residues have pref. 4-7 ring members. R2, R3 are alkyl, omega-haloalkyl and cycloalkyl or can form together a 5-7 membered ring, Y is halogen pref. chlorine. The carbon monoxide pressure is pref. 300-400 bar and the temp. 0-10 deg.C, the optimum depending on the starting material used.

    Abstract: The invention relates to dihydroxy compounds which are attached to ester groups and have reduced reactivity and the formula I in which R is a linear or branched alkylene radical with 2 to 20 C atoms, an optionally substituted cycloalkylene radical with 5 to 10 carbon atoms, or a polyoxyalkylene radical composed of 2 to 50 oxyalkyl groups which are linked blockwise or in random distribution and have 2 to 4 C atoms in the alkylene radical. The dihydroxy compounds are prepared by transesterification of alkyl hydroxypivalates with alkanediols, cycloalkanediols or polyoxyalkylene glycols and are used in polyurethane chemistry.
